A Friday In The Canyon

Glen Canyon is a unique feature in the city - a peaceful oasis - and we haven't spent much time there recently, even though we often start roams from Glen Park. This Friday roam will take us from the south of the canyon to the north alongside Islais Creek, and back along the side of the hill. If we get lucky we might see a pair of coyotes as we did last time we were up on the slopes. In any case, we will sit on the rocks overlooking the creek valley. We will also have time to visit a couple of the famous dirt roads in the village. There will be a couple of climbs and plenty of dirt on the way round. *Bringing water, snacks, and layers for all the microclimates is the way to go.* *These roams are offered by donation. They are one way I am able to pay my rent in San Francisco.* *Punctuality is always appreciated, for the sake of everybody's time. Please send a message on the app before the start if you are running late, and we will either wait (up to ten minutes) of I will direct you on how to catch up. Once we get underway I have to focus on those who are there, and most likely won't respond.* *Generally half the people who sign up don't actually show up on the day. I do track flakiness and remove people who have a poor attendance record. Mammoth to Yosemite Backpack

This is a multi-day trip from Mammoth Red Cones trail to Yosemite Tuolumne Meadows. * This is a 5 days/4nights and \~42 miles, 6,500 ft vertical backpacking trip. * You must be an experienced backpacker to join. There is no minimum pace requirement but the ability to average at least 2mph is recommended. At the same time, it is not going to be a race to get from point to point, and the expectation is that we will remain together or at least within sight of each other. **Itinerary -** * Day 1 - Meet at Tuolumne Meadows and take the 1:05pm ($16) bus to Mammoth Village. From Mammoth Village take the shuttle to Horseshoe Lake where the trailhead is. From there hike about 2 miles to a suitable campsite, note there is no camping at McCloud Lake so we will need to travel past that before camping. * Day 2 - Hike to Vivian Lake, \~10.5 miles * Day 3 - Hike to Thousand Island Lake, \~9.5 miles * Day4 - Hike just past Donohue Pass, \~11 miles * Day 5 - Hike out to TM, \~9 miles * PLEASE EMAIL ME FIRST - jlmuncie@yahoo.com to coordinate and go over your backpacking experience. * This itinerary is flexible. There's lots of good camping in the area and as long as the entire group agrees I'm open to modifications. * COST: $5 for permit fees. Roaming South of the Slot

Last up for the month, on the 29th, is another roam that I have been thinking about for a while, but have been postponing, around SOMA - South of the Slot as it used to be known. This month the [Gene Friend Rec Center](https://sfrecpark.org/m/newsflash/home/detail/2990) has re-opened, so we will certainly stop by there. The germ for this one was actually a real estate listing that mentioned a street I had never heard of. We may or may not make it to that particular block, but there are any numbers of alleys and half-block streets in this area, which wears several layers of history on its sleeve. These days it is fairly well-known for those who live precariously, inside or out, and we may encounter folks like this on the way round; best not to come if this makes you nervous or uncomfortable, and of course I will do my best to navigate around potential hazards. Fort Funston / Lake Merced Hike (Dogs Very Welcome)

In the south west corner of San Francisco lies Fort Funston part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. It features 200-foot high sandy bluffs over-looking the coast where the winds blow reliably wildly. One of the premier hang-gliding spots in the country. Dog Heaven, you will see hundreds of dogs through the trails and on the beach and owners will can take leashes off here. It is also home to the Fort Funston Native Plant Nursery. Sand Dunes: Plants with deep roots and a tolerance for harsh conditions are uniquely adapted to growing on a constantly shifting sand-dune landscape. The San Francisco peninsula was once covered with sand dunes, and today the peninsula's largest remaining dune field can be found at Fort Funston. South Tyrol, Italy - Dolomites Hiking trip, Venice tour (optional)

Short trip idea: 3 hikes in Val Gardena area, 1 day Bolzano tour, 3 hikes Misurina - Cortina area, 1.5 day Venice tour ( optional) Our transportation will be rent cars ( ideally 4 travelers per car), so if you decide to join this trip let me know if you open to be carpool driver. Twilight Walk Along the Waterfront (with Off The Grid or Sundown Cinema)

Heads up- Aspyn the dog may join me on this walk. Start your weekend by joining us for a slightly shorter after-work walk this Friday, giving you plenty of opportunity to enjoy 2 of San Francisco's fun, free outdoor events: Off The Grid at Fort Mason, or Sundown Cinema at Marina Green. It's too crowded to do these events as a group, so we'll break off and catch up with each other as we can. Your "yes" RSVP is only for the walk. We will try to have enough time to grab something before the film starts (the last time we did this, everyone left OTG once the film began and were had the whole place practically to ourselves. Low chairs allowed, but you'll have to carry it on the walk. You can grab a bite at OTG or bring a sandwich and a beverage. We'll meet ON LAGUNA STREET (not in the parking lot) of the Marina Safeway. We'work our way over to the Fort Mason gardens before heading to the waterfront at twilight. We return through the neighborhoods, making sure we're back at Marina Green in time to enjoy the festivities. **WE START WALKING AT 6:00 PM** ON THE DOT. Please arrive a few minutes early to check in and use the restroom (at the Safeway or at the marina) This is a fairly easy walk, mostly flat with some hills at Fort Mason. It should take just about 1 1/2 hours. Sunset is at 7:54 If the weather cooperates, you should be able to see the sunset from either Fort Mason or Marina Green. Even with a bit of fog, the waterfront has a magical, calming quality. We walk in a loop and end about 2 blocks from our starting point. GETTING THERE- Public transportation is your best bet. Muni bus #43 (Masonic) ends its run at Marina and Laguna- in front of the Safeway and next to Fort Mason.. Line #30(Stockton) goes to Chestnut/Laguna. #28 (19th Avenue) stops a few blocks away at Lombard/Fillmore, and the 22 (Fillmore) ends at Chestnut. It's about a 10 minute walk from line #45 (Union) at Union/Buchanan. There are also multiple Golden Gate Transit lines that run along Lombard. Driving- This is a busy residential and recreation area, and there are two big events happening. Parking could be tricky, as Off The Grid uses all the spaces at Fort Mason. Your best bet for parking might be Fillmore Street between Marina Middle School and the waterfront. There is a paid garage at Pierce and Chestnut. ATTENDANCE-Basically-EVERYONE WHO RSVPS "yes" is expected to attend. If you have a change in plans, update your RSVP. No showing is very bad and will probably get you removed from the group. Late cancel is also bad and will be noted. EVERYONE WHO ATTENDS MUST RSVP. Showing up with RSVPing is not acceptable This walk is only open to San Francisco City Steps members. Dogs are always welcome on my walks. I may have one with me. They must be well-behaved with people and other dogs, and remain on-leash at all times. Please note that both events may be very crowded, so make sure your dog doesn't spook easily. You are responsible for your own safety on all City Steps walks.
