We take an accessible approach to the craft, proving that you don't need a crutch of big, expensive tools to create a high-quality blade. This class is the perfect first taste of your metalworking journey, providing a foundational education that you can take in whatever direction you choose. Together, we will heat up steel, hammer it into shape, and refine it using hand tools. You will fashion a custom handle and craft a leather sheath for your new blade. Before any weaving begins, we’ll scrub and clean our gourds together, connecting to the full process from raw material to finished piece. Participants will then learn the basics of pine needle weaving and how to use it to embellish and transform a gourd. We meet almost every Wednesday of the year; if we are "dark" for any reason (usually limited to Christmas and New Year's Day weeks, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, and sometimes the 4th of July week), you will be told as a response to your RSVP. We recently started meeting in person the 1st Wednesday of each month in downtown Oakland at an "Oakstop" location at 1721 Broadway #201 (street level; doors face sidewalk on Broadway). Metered on street parking (you can pre-pay before 8am, which is when charging for time actually begins; most close-by metered spaces are limited to 60 minutes though it might be possible to extend time via a parking app). There are also parking lots in the area. On all other Wednesdays each month we meet online via Zoom. When you RSVP for a meeting after your request to meet with us has been approved, or at the time of your initial request, please include a short description of your business and also include your contact information in case we need to reach you before the meeting. You can attend our chapter twice as a visitor (this Meetup group seeks to find visitors to our group as a first step toward formally joining Best of the Bay) before submitting a formal application to join. Please also let us know how many guests you want to bring and tell us something about what is/are their professions.

*My scheduled trip to Tassajara next week has been cancelled due to smoke in the valley from the Timber fire in Big Sur, so I am adding a roam to the schedule.* After our roam south of Market, this will be another very flat and gentle roam through the industrial area served by Mission Creek. There is a lot of history here, albeit mostly covered up by landfill, and the rail tracks that used to fill the area are mostly gone, even though we can see the traces once we start looking. I have long wanted to wander round the elegant warehouses of the Design District, and thought to combine it with a walk along both banks of the creek, whose original estuary shaped this whole part of the city. *Bringing water, snacks, and layers for all the microclimates is the way to go.* *These roams are offered by donation. They are one way I am able to pay my rent in San Francisco.* *Punctuality is always appreciated, for the sake of everybody's time. Please send a message on the app before the start if you are running late, and we will either wait (up to ten minutes) of I will direct you on how to catch up. Once we get underway I have to focus on those who are there, and most likely won't respond.* *Generally half the people who sign up don't actually show up on the day. I do track flakiness and remove people who have a poor attendance record. Mammoth to Yosemite Backpack

This is a multi-day trip from Mammoth Red Cones trail to Yosemite Tuolumne Meadows. * This is a 5 days/4nights and \~42 miles, 6,500 ft vertical backpacking trip. * You must be an experienced backpacker to join. There is no minimum pace requirement but the ability to average at least 2mph is recommended. At the same time, it is not going to be a race to get from point to point, and the expectation is that we will remain together or at least within sight of each other. **Itinerary -** * Day 1 - Meet at Tuolumne Meadows and take the 1:05pm ($16) bus to Mammoth Village. From Mammoth Village take the shuttle to Horseshoe Lake where the trailhead is. From there hike about 2 miles to a suitable campsite, note there is no camping at McCloud Lake so we will need to travel past that before camping. * Day 2 - Hike to Vivian Lake, \~10.5 miles * Day 3 - Hike to Thousand Island Lake, \~9.5 miles * Day4 - Hike just past Donohue Pass, \~11 miles * Day 5 - Hike out to TM, \~9 miles * PLEASE EMAIL ME FIRST - jlmuncie@yahoo.com to coordinate and go over your backpacking experience. * This itinerary is flexible. There's lots of good camping in the area and as long as the entire group agrees I'm open to modifications. * COST: $5 for permit fees.
