Caven Point, NJ. Wildlife Photowalk

We are going to Caven Point natural reserve, between Port Liberty and Liberty State Park. Please note: There is no public transport available. But for those arriving by car there is parking. Parking is free and so is the entrance to the park. Caven Point is an ecologically unique area; habitat for many species including migrating birds. It features sandy beach, saltwater marshland, and boardwalk trail. it is one of two wetlands in NYC to have survived in its natural state. It is an important site for native birds nesting as it is positioned right on the Hudson River Estuary, serving as a critical late-fall pitstop and overwintering ground. Waterfowl usually spotted in November is the brant, mallard, horned grebe, and peregrine falcon among others. Bring waterproof boots and telephoto lenses.

The Touch Grass Book Club Meet-Up: Mary Oliver's Upstream

Bring your journal and your sense of wonder (and maybe a pair of binoculars) to the first Touch Grass Book Club meet-up! In this session, we'll be exploring Mary Oliver's iconic essay collection Upstream and then venturing out to do some nature observation and writing of our own. From there, we'll reconvene to discuss what we experienced and learned. Light snacks will be provided! **Though the body we move in nature, with our mind/consciousness we are part of nature.** **MINDFULNESS - the practice of maintaining a nonjudgemental state of heighted or complete awareness of one's thoughts, emotions or experiences on a moment-to-moment basis.** **MINDFUL WALKING - a practice that enhances mental clarity and reduces stress by fostering a deep connection with the present moment (the here and now) through awareness of each individual step and the Sight, Sound and Smell of the surrounding environment.** **Take the 10:00 am Governors Island Ferry from the Battery Maritime Building (10 South Street).** **You can book the ferry online or at the BMB.** **(check the Governors Island website for complete information)** **Please read the below information carefully and take the time to view the myriads of videos available that explain the concept of Mindful Walking.** **Let me begin by thanking you for accompanying me on a work in progress to develop a methodology for teaching and leading a Mindful Walking workshop, my goal is to guide/lead the novice through an unfamiliar or complex procedure in a step-by-step process so that they can attain a basic level of skill and knowledge in the practice of Mindful Walking. Upon meeting at the Governors Island Welcome Center for a brief introduction we will proceed to Nolan Park and commerce with a breathing and exercise session, followed by several training practice walks that will introduce the attendees to the techniques of Mindful Walking.** **For the remainder of our Governors Island adventure, we will alternate long bouts of conversation flowing walking sessions with shorter bouts of silent guided Mindful Walking sessions (which will transverse the natural scenic beauty of the The Great Promenade and The Hills).** **Because of the workshop nature of this event, I will limit the number of attendees to ten (10) people. My future vision for this method of training is to present many workshops for first timers, mixed with separate events for those adepts with the Mindful Walking concept. Furthermore, I will expand the range of this event to scenic natural locations (including waterside venues) around the Greater New York area.** **Our journey will end at back at the Welcome Center.** **Will be walking at a moderate (not slow) pace. Wildlife Photography Workshop: Bronx Zoo

Visit a zoo in the winter? Absolutely! The Bronx zoo is open year-round, which is fortunate for us as animals love the snow, and nothing makes a more impressive photograph than a fierce tiger surrounding by a wintery backdrop. The winter also means less crowds, less heat and humidity and more active animals. The zoo also boasts some impressive indoor exhibits as well, giving us a chance to stay warm and toasty while photographing exotic species. Exhibit highlights include Jungle World, the Bronx Zoo's indoor rain forest featuring nearly 800 species, Madagascar, showcasing a variety of wildlife and plants from the island, Himalayan Highlands (weather permitting), Highland Himalayas (weather permitting), home to the striking snow leopards and red panda, Sea Lion Pool (weather permitting), watch them frolic, play and get fed, creating the perfect opportunity for capturing images, and Astor Court, home to the zoo's original landmark Beaux-Arts buildings. We'll cover such topics as camera settings for wildlife photography, focusing on fast moving birds and animals, handling tricky lighting situations, composing great wildlife images, storytelling, and framing.
