MKC + Paddle against current: Intermediate volunteer trip

*This trip is open to those who have volunteered in 2026 during our **public kayaking days.*** Once the RSVP opens, you will be placed on a waitlist until the host reviews your volunteer status and to make sure you completed the qualifications below. *** **MKC Intermediate volunteer trip: 4 miles total PLUS an extra paddle north against current** Let's paddle across the Hudson to visit our friends at MKC! After we launch from Pier 84, let's work off whatever we ate by heading north against building ebb, then float home. **PREREQUISITES TO RSVP:** 1. volunteered **AT LEAST** 4 shifts in 2026 during our free kayaking days AND 2. Completed at least 2 trainings in 2026 with our boathouse AND 3. Completed an intermediate time trial AND 4. You completed a 4+ mile round trip in 2026 in which you showed control of your kayak/SUP/OC and found it easy to stay toward the front of the group **COME PREPARED:** * Temperature appropriate clothing - neoprene or drysuit + non cotton layers (you may be able to borrow a drysuit) * Something warm to put on when we land * Water * Food if you plan to picnic or cash/credit to buy food there. * Sunscreen * Hat * Change of dry clothes for when we return * Anything else you may need to spend 2+ hours paddling! **CRAFT:** * Sit on top - Nope! * Sea Kayak - Only if completed a wet exit and show control of your kayak * OC1/OC2 - Ke Aloha ***supporting*** paddlers with a Ke Aloha coach approval (have coach contact host) * SUP - Only if completed a 4+ mile trip with our boathouse * Surfski - Only if completed a 4+ mile trip with our boathouse **TIMELINE:** 7:00 AM Arrive at the boathouse **7:15 AM Safety briefing hard cutoff to arrive. Hike and Fall Foliage Lake Stroll on Staten Island

Join us on Staten Island for a leisurely walk uphill for panoramic views and then around five lakes. The pace is moderate to slow. Six miles with return by bus to the ferry. We head out from St. George ferry along Bay Street and walk a steady uphill for about 2 miles along multicultural shops on Victory Boulevard to Silver Lake. Along the way, we enter Hero Park, then pass Notre Dame Academy, Belvedere Social Club, and majestic homes along Howard Avenue. We’ll descend stone steps to the path around Silver Lake (pond and reservoir) and stop at Veranda Grill for lunch at outdoor picnic tables. Then zigzag over bridges of three Clove lakes to historic tulip tree. MEET: Take the 10:30 a.m. ferry from Manhattan to Staten Island. Meet Kiki near restrooms on upper level of Whitehall Terminal at 10:15 a.m. Or meet Diana in front of restrooms in Staten Island St. George Terminal at 11 a.m. END: Take the S48 bus on the corner of Forest Ave and Clove Rd. to ferry. Option to walk back to ferry. Or join us for drinks at Mariachi (Minthorne Alley) (exit bus at Victory). End time variable. Alpine: Elite Volunteer Trip - 30 miles

**Elite Level Volunteer Trip - Alpine - 30 miles** Our longest trip north! We will paddle and watch the beautiful palisades with hopefully lots of fall foliage**🍂** We may also stop and check out a cute tiny waterfall. You must be able to paddle at least 4 knots per hour for the 6+ hours. Please understand that this will be a **fast paced marathon** and you must keep up. **PREREQUISITES TO RSVP:** Make sure you pass all the requirements below before RSVPing * Volunteered a minimum of 4 embayment shifts in 2026 * You have experienced and show complete control of your craft in 1-2 ft waves, and 10+ knots of wind * Make sure you read the "craft prerequisites" **CRAFT PREREQUISITES** You have **experienced** conditions and demonstrated the following skills on the craft you chose: * You have completed an elite trip in 2025 or 2026 OR have completed an advanced trip in the craft of your choice in 2026 * You can land and take off without any assistance * You can and will carry ALL your own stuff (looking at you SUPers) * You are very very fast and have lots of stamina to keep up a fast pace for 3+ hours each way. * You can comfortably paddle for 8 hours * If you plan to take an OC you must be a *2026 supporting paddler* and have a Ke Aloha coach contact the host with approval **COME PREPARED:** * Make sure you have proper clothing to temperature of air and water and other conditions * Sunscreen * Water in a reusable bottle. Lots of water * Snacks * FOOD! **Though the body we move in nature, with our mind/consciousness we are part of nature.** **MINDFULNESS - the practice of maintaining a nonjudgemental state of heighted or complete awareness of one's thoughts, emotions or experiences on a moment-to-moment basis.** **MINDFUL WALKING - a practice that enhances mental clarity and reduces stress by fostering a deep connection with the present moment (the here and now) through awareness of each individual step and the Sight, Sound and Smell of the surrounding environment.** **Take the 10:00 am Governors Island Ferry from the Battery Maritime Building (10 South Street).** **You can book the ferry online or at the BMB.** **(check the Governors Island website for complete information)** **Please read the below information carefully and take the time to view the myriads of videos available that explain the concept of Mindful Walking.** **Let me begin by thanking you for accompanying me on a work in progress to develop a methodology for teaching and leading a Mindful Walking workshop, my goal is to guide/lead the novice through an unfamiliar or complex procedure in a step-by-step process so that they can attain a basic level of skill and knowledge in the practice of Mindful Walking. Upon meeting at the Governors Island Welcome Center for a brief introduction we will proceed to Nolan Park and commerce with a breathing and exercise session, followed by several training practice walks that will introduce the attendees to the techniques of Mindful Walking.** **For the remainder of our Governors Island adventure, we will alternate long bouts of conversation flowing walking sessions with shorter bouts of silent guided Mindful Walking sessions (which will transverse the natural scenic beauty of the The Great Promenade and The Hills).** **Because of the workshop nature of this event, I will limit the number of attendees to ten (10) people. My future vision for this method of training is to present many workshops for first timers, mixed with separate events for those adepts with the Mindful Walking concept. Furthermore, I will expand the range of this event to scenic natural locations (including waterside venues) around the Greater New York area.** **Our journey will end at back at the Welcome Center.** **Will be walking at a moderate (not slow) pace. The walk will last three hours and will cover about 4 miles. In honor of Halloween, we will do a tour of downtown burial sites, We will meet at 915 for a prompt 930 start at the 4,5 Wall Street station near Broadway and Wall Street. Come a little early if you wish to explore the Trinity Church cemetery before we start walking. About 6-7 miles, brisk steady pace, few rest stops, many drop out points. Walk the NYC Marathon Course

Join us for a 26-mile walk that follows the NYC Marathon route from Bay Ridge to the finish line in Central Park, two days before the actual marathon. This will not be one of Shorewalkers’ scenic hikes, but it is the route of the prestigious NYC marathon that attracts people from all over the world. While the NYC marathon traverses all five boroughs of the city, we will have to skip Staten Island, since we won’t be able to get on the Verrazano Bridge, where the marathon starts. But we will follow the exact route through Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Manhattan, with a few detours to get to restrooms. The walk will be entirely on city streets, mostly flat, except for the bridges we will cross. We will walk along Fourth Avenue through Bay Ridge, Sunset Park and Park Slope into downtown Brooklyn, then along Lafayette Avenue with its beautiful brown stones, to and along Bedford Avenue, through the Hasidic neighborhood of Williamsburg to its hipster part north of the Williamsburg Bridge, to Greenpoint, over the Pulaski Bridge to Long Island City, over the Queensborough Bridge into Manhattan and along First Avenue up to the Willis Avenue Bridge into the Bronx and back into Manhattan over the Madison Avenue Bridge, and finally down Fifth Avenue to Central Park and the finish line at Tavern on the Green. We will walk about 26 miles (probably a bit more, due to detours to get to restrooms), at a brisk pace (3 mph) throughout the walk, from beginning to end. There won’t be time for longer breaks, so please bring snacks you can munch on during the walk. We will have a short 10-15 minute lunch break at McCarren Park in Greenpoint. Restrooms: Inside the final R train stop, Bay Ridge-95 St before exiting the station (they are surprisingly clean); Shore Road Park close to the Verrazano Bridge, 0.5 miles from the meeting point (these restrooms are supposed to open at 8:00 a.m. but often are not, in which case we will have to improvise); Green-Wood Cemetery, at about 5 miles; Underwood Park, at about 8 miles; Bedford Playground, at about 9 miles; McCarren Park, at about 11 miles; TJ Maxx Manhattan, at about 16.5 miles; St. Catherine Playground, at about 17.5 miles; Lozada Playground in the Bronx, at about 19 miles; Central Park north, at about 21.5 miles; and at the finish at Tavern on the Green. Note that the restrooms in playgrounds usually close at 4 PM, so the ones in Manhattan and the Bronx may not be available if we get there after that time.
