Columbus Improv Comedy Meetup - Thursdays at VHS Social Club

Whether you've never done improv before, or you've done it for so long you were quoted in *Truth in Comedy*, or anywhere in between, come join us! Swing by *VHS Social Club* for the **Columbus Improv Comedy Meetup**! The idea behind improvised comedy is to create entire scenes from scratch. A suggestion is taken from the audience and laughter is built on the spot. This can be done in game form, like *Whose Line Is It Anyway, Make Some Noise,* or *Wild 'n Out*; it can also be done in a longer way, to tell a complicated story, like *TJ & Dave*. Our meetup, which is central Ohio's longest running (and FREE!) weekly comedy event, brings the games for you to play in a safe, supportive, and compassionate environment. Afterward, many members will hang out in *VHS Social Club* itself and get to know each other. Not only is this a lot of fun, but you get to work on thinking faster on your feet, your public speaking, plus it's an excellent way to meet new people and build relationships that will last a lifetime, and you do that while laughing your butt off! Ask yourself if you want to join the **Columbus Improv Comedy Meetup**, and say "*Yes, And*" that you'll have a blast!

Oscar Watch: WILD HORSE NINE at the Drexel Theatre!

Join us as we get together to see a dark-comedy-dramatic-thriller and that rare combination of films that’s a heavy Oscar contender and wildly entertaining, WILD HORSE NINE! The film is written/directed by Martin McDonagh and follows a pair of CIA agents as they face a trust-testing mission from Santiago to Easter Island during 1973 in Chile. Here’s a description, trailer and plan for this event: DESCRIPTION: Shortly before the 1973 Chilean coup d'etat, two CIA officers are sent from Santiago to Easter Island. Among the island's iconic statues, the longtime partners wrestle with their dark pasts and present conspiracies, while one’s newfound bond with a pair of rebellious students threatens to send everyone's trip to this remote paradise sideways. The film is written/directed by Martin McDonagh (In Bruges, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, The Banshees of Inisherin) and stars John Malkovich, Sam Rockwell, Steve Buscemi, Tom Waits and Parker Posey. TRAILER: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Haw_sznA5aQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Haw_sznA5aQ) BUZZ & ACCLAIM: Wild Horse Nine premiered to a rapturous response at this year’s Venice International Film Festival where John Malkovich won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor! It is earning a stellar 94% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, where critics call it “intelligent, superb filmmaking” with an “expert blend of poignant drama and blistering dark comedy” and featuring some of the best performances ever “by Malkovich, Rockwell and Buscemi.” This is one of those rare movies that's actually fun and entertaining, smart and moving, and poised to be a major player at next year's Oscars! DINNER PLAN: For dinner, we’ll switch it up this time and go with dinner at the Rusty Bucket BEFORE the show! Meet at the restaurant at 5:15pm and we’ll have a section reserved for the group! MOVIE PLAN: Please purchase your ticket for the 7:00pm showing and we’ll meet in the lobby area at 6:45pm! If you can, recommend purchasing your ticket before dinner to avoid the line! When you purchase yours, be sure to mention you’re with the Movie Group for admission and concession discounts. For parking, the lot near Brassica will put your car exactly mid-way between the theater and restaurant! (Side-note: The sidewalk between the restaurant/theater is finally open again!) Can't wait, Dan

Choose Your Movie: JIMMY vs GODZILLA MINUS ZERO at Cinemark Stoneridge!

Join us as we get together for a CMG Choose Your Movie event and one of our toughest choices yet! Option 1 is JIMMY, a biographical drama following the life of beloved actor Jimmy Stewart. It follows his life from winning the Oscar for Best Actor in The Philadelphia Story, to enlisting and becoming a combat pilot in the U.S. Army Air Force, and through his return home in the role of George Bailey in It’s a Wonderful Life. Option 2 is GODZILLA MINUS ZERO, a follow-up to the outstanding (and Oscar-winning) Godzilla Minus One (2023). The film picks up in 1949 postwar Japan as it struggles to rebuild while facing a new threat from King Ghidorah. Here are descriptions, trailers and our plan for this event: JIMMY: The film tells the untold true story of America’s most-beloved actor and the iconic role that saved him. It focuses on the most transformative season in Jimmy Stewart’s life—from winning the Academy Award for Best Actor in The Philadelphia Story to enlisting and becoming a combat pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps at the beginning of World War II. Stewart flew twenty missions over Europe, rising to the rank of colonel by the end of the war, only to return home broken and disheartened. Then George Bailey and It’s a Wonderful Life came calling. The film is directed by Aaron Burns and stars KJ Apa in the title role, alongside Jason Alexander, Max Casella, Sarah Drew, Jen Lilley and Christopher McDonald. TRAILER: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EURriesRel0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EURriesRel0) GODZILLA MINUS ZERO: Set in 1949, the Shikishima family confronts a fresh catastrophe two years after surviving their previous ordeal with the legendary monster. Like its predecessor, the film is a character-driven drama, grounded in deep human emotion, all while providing all the monster smashing spectacle of the traditional Godzilla movies! The film is written/directed/visual effects by Takashi Yamazaki. It stars Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Yuki Yamada, Kuranosuke Sasaki, Sakura Ando, and Miou Tanaka all returning to reprise their roles from Minus One, along with Min Tanaka, Masami Nagasawa and Jun Kunimura. BUZZ & ACCLAIM: The film premiered to stellar reviews at the Japanese International and New York Film Festivals. With a near perfect 95% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, critics say: “Towering side-by-side with its predecessor, every bit its equal, Godzilla Minus Zero is simply incredible blockbuster filmmaking.” Others declare, “With devastating human drama and earth-shaking kaiju action, Godzilla Minus Zero ups the ante in every way from its predecessor – and is easily one of the best films of the year.” TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_Xfz5IMGDs PLAN: Details confirmed and tickets on sale for BOTH films! If you’d like to see JIMMY, please purchase your ticket for the 7:00pm showing and meet in the lobby area between 6:35 and 6:45pm! If you’d like to see GODZILLA MINUS ZERO, please purchase your ticket for the 6:30pm showing and meet inside the theater lobby between 6:10 and 6:20pm! Advance purchase is advised! Once you have yours, please list your movie of choice and seat number in the Comments section of this event! Look forward to seeing you there, Dan

Shut Up & Write!™ Easton Town Center

We'll meet at The Capital One Café, 167 Easton Town Center, Space A-103. This is in the main mall where the Microsoft store used to be, on your left if you're standing at the bottom of the AMC Theater escalator. Join us on Saturday for an hour of uninterrupted wordmaking! • What we'll do Join us for an hour of writing! We’ve discovered that it’s strikingly helpful to write with other writers. See if it’s true for you at 10AM on Saturday mornings. Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done. SCHEDULE: 10:00 - SESSION 1: quick intros. 10:10 - timer starts: write for 1 hour. 11:10 - chat / take off / keep writing. OPTIONAL SOCIALIZING happens at 11A-11:30ish. Writing is very solitary. Connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing. BEING LATE IS OKAY: just show up and get settled, then check-in with me after the session. (I’ll be the person with the Shut Up & Write! sign.) If you were on time, please be willing to make room for the friendly latecomer. Happy writing and I look forward to seeing you! • What to bring Whatever you need to be able to write! Bring earbuds/earplugs if you want to block noise or the occasional conversation by other patrons. Electrical outlets are limited, so charge your devices before whenever possible. See you at The Café on Saturday!
