'Hyde Park Treasure Hunt' - can you find the treasure?

Come along on Saturday 5th September for treasure hunt around Hyde Park! The treasure hunts are a good way to get to know an area of London whilst meeting new people. **About the area** Hyde Park is a 350-acre, historic Grade I listed urban park. The park was established by Henry VIII in 1536 when he took the land from Westminster Abbey and used it as a hunting ground. It opened to the public in 1637 and quickly became popular, It hosted the Great Exhibition of 1851, many demonstrations and music concerts, featuring groups such as Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones and Queen.. **How it works** Come along at 1:30pm and you will be randomly divided into teams of 3 people (or you can choose your own team beforehand). For fairness, any London Guides or Blue Badge Tour Guides won't be allowed to take part. Then each team will be given 15-20 written clues which you have to find the answers for. It's up to your team to work together to find the answers. The answers will be found on blue plaques or statues. You can answer them in any order and you will be provided with a map of the park to help you. It's not a race, so you can take your time getting to know the area. **Prizes** The team to get the most correct answers and then return to base (a local pub or cafe) will win book vouchers for Waterstones bookshops of £10 per person. If more than one team gets the top score, there will be a tie break question back at the pub. Thames Foreshore Visit - Greenwich! (Free for Full Members)

Running through the heart of London; the River Thames has played a central role in the history of the city, and when the tide is low, the capital’s longest archaeological site is revealed. Come along on Sunday 13th September to explore its history! **About the foreshore** I will be your guide as we will be going down to the Thames foreshore at low tide, where we will have about 1h 30mins to have a look around for objects before the tide comes in. I will tell you more about foreshore, the industry in the area and will be on hand to identify and date objects you find. Most objects you can spot sitting on the foreshore after being washed in on the tide (we are not allowed to dig or scrape the foreshore surface). You will find everything from bits of pottery, clay pipes, bottles, animal bones to ship items. Most of the things we find are from the Medieval to the Victorian period or you might be lucky and find something Roman or older. **Footwear** The foreshore is very stony and sometimes muddy, so please wear sensible shoes (preferably walking boots/shoes or wellington boots). Plastic gloves and bags will be provided. We will be finished by about 11:00am. **The Thames Foreshore is private land, so before we go down, I have to give everyone a short talk on health & safety on the foreshore. The event is free to join. Please consider contributing contribute £2 toward the cost of the event and for my time. Alternatively, I can provide tuition at a cost of £10 for the session. All welcome! Please bring your own drawing materials. There are stools you can borrow. Please note MUSEUM POLICY - use a hand-held pad and only draw with pencils. We will draw in the galleries from 10.40 am. Highbury Corner Picture Hunt

We meet outside Highbury and Islington tube station. Please bring a pen. We mark up at a Wetherspoon pub. How are your detecting skills? Welcome to another of our many outside Picture Hunts this year. This time, the event will be centred around shop fronts, buildings and features around the Highbury corner end of Upper Street Islington. There’s no crossing of busy roads. If you’re new to Picture Hunts, check photos below and previous events for winners and clue sheets. Pkease aim to turn up for 1:00-1:30 when teams are being arranged. As usual, portions of the road are split up into three or four areas where teams search for the locations of photographed items in the street, buildings or shop windows, and then record where they found them. Picture Hunts are a great new way to get up to speed with slices of London history while sleuthing around the area. Everyone is presented with twenty partial photos of objects around an area. Your team mission is to find them. Some well known, some well unknown! This makes Picture Hunts more interesting and challenging, bringing out the best of your teams detecting skills. You will also have a map of the area. It will be sub-divided into four sections, P, Q, R, S. Each photo will come from one of these. Four players max per team, but the lower number teams get a point per player start from the biggest team. For example, four teams of one, two, three and four. Four player team, no advantage, (the biggest and theoretically the more knowledge between them, except it doesn't always work like that). Three player team, one point start. Two player team, two point start. One player team, three point start. Scores are always close and around the 15-20 points mark. How many players do you want in your team? There's a dilemma! The clipboard holder enters one of the letters to note its area location. Dead simple, right? 90 minutes to do the hunt. We have the usual prizes of chocolate, including some great new varieties. There is also an equal prize for the funniest team name. Names win prizes too! So there’s everything to play for. We mark up at a local pub. Hunts are good fun and the proven experience so far is that members get to know each other better after working in teams as you all have to communicate. Great icebreakers. 'Wren's City Churches' Guided Walk

Come along on Sunday 6th September at 1:30pm for a guided walk around the City on the churches that were built by Sir Christopher Wren. **About the walk** I will be guiding you around the City of London to see and go inside some of the churches that were built by Sir Christopher Wren after the Great Fire of London in 1666. I will talk about Wren himself, his two assistants; Nicholas Hawksmoor and Robert Hooke, each church's architecture, it's history, the churches that were here before 1666, the Great Fire of London and the damage done during the Blitz of WW2. Hopefully we will be able to go inside a few to view them from inside. Christopher Michael Wren (1632 - 1723), was born in East Knoyle, Wiltshire and is one of the most highly acclaimed English architects in history. He was accorded responsibility for rebuilding 52 churches in the City of London after the Great Fire in 1666, including his masterpiece, St. Paul's Cathedral, on Ludgate Hill. Other notable buildings by Wren include the Royal Naval College in Greenwich, and the south front of Hampton Court Palace. The guided walk will be led by myself. Day trip by coach - Towns, a Village & a View in Hertfordshire! (only £27 each)

Come along on Saturday 12th September for a coach trip to Hertfordshire! **About the trip** Hertfordshire sits just north of London and is one of the greeniest counties in southern England. It has some very pretty villages set in rolling countryside. We will be in west Hertfordshire visiting: **Aldbury** Aldbury is one of the most picturesque villages in Hertfordshire, with timber-framed cottages and a historic inn clustered around the village duck pond where an old set of stocks still stand. Most of the land surrounding the village is largely unaltered since the late medieval period. It has been used as a setting for popular T.V programmes including 'Midsummer Murders' and films like 'The Dirty Dozen', 'Bridget Jones' and 'The Thursday Murder Club'. **Tring** Tring is also historic market town where the ancient Icknield Way crosses the Roman road of Akerman Street, The town has a strong connection with the first president of the United States; George Washington, as his great-grandfather John left Tring in 1656 to live in the New World. The Grand Union Canal also passes through the town and it has a fantastic Natural History Museum. **Wendover** Wendover is an attractive market town on the edge of the Chiltern Hills. The striking Clock Tower is Wendover's most recognisable landmark, which was built in 1842 as a Market Hall and prison. A row of attractive thatched cottages on the Tring road are said to have been a marriage gift of Henry VIII to Anne Boleyn. **Coombe Hill Monument** Coombe Hill Monument is a 64-foot granite obelisk standing at 852 feet above sea level just outside Wendover. Built in 1904, it gives stunning panoramic views and on a clear day, you can see the Berkshire Downs, the Cotswolds and Chequers, the country home of the Prime Minister.
