Learning to ‘see’ interesting detail is a practiced skill and we introduce you to easy methods that will open your photographer’s eye and expose you to a world that is alive with detail. Southside Music Collective 26th of JULY Session.

Hi there! Welcome to the Southside Music Collective - hosted at Cricle Music, Botany. This is a jam that is open to beginner and intermediate players and we welcome all instruments, musical genre's and skill levels. All you need is a keenness to learn and an open mind for all things musical. Our goal is to help get you out of the bedroom and onto the stage. We can help you achieve this goal by working as a team. You will be being guided by professional musicians with years of live music experience, touring and teaching. This is also this is a great environment to meet fellow musicians and talk all things music. Moving on from what the more casual format of Sydney Jammers, we want to focus a smaller song list but with an end goal of having a tighter sounding unit. From there we would be booking a showcase style gigs at least twice a year. The first meetup point: City Extra Cafe, Circular Quay at 8.45 AM. Departure point: Campbells Cove Wharf. (Located past the International Shipping Terminal, Circular Quay) The second meetup point; the Ship Inn, Circular Quay at 12 noon or Midday. June and July are the prime months for the Northward annual migration of whales off Sydney; moving from Antarctica. The tours will need to be booked by individuals at their own expense and pricing starts around $ 90. The booking details are: 9.30 am departure, pricing $91, Book through Whale Watching Sydney, phone 1800 326 822. By making the booking all participants accept all risks associated with the activity. I would recommend a telephoto zoom lens of between 100 -500mm and a mirrorless or digital SLR camera for this activity. You may find a shutter speed of 1000 or above using auto ISO useful. We look at the elements of design that represent the building blocks of any photograph. Composition uses forms, shadows, colours and lines and is key to crafting a work that can truly be called art. You will learn to compose with depth of field as well as learn the very important skill of planning and positioning background elements to set the subject. Also explore the various ways to use light in your images and the effects we can create using different shutter speeds. **1st meetup point:** The anchor outside the Australian Maritime Museum at 10.am N.B. For those who like coffee there is a shop opposite HMAS Vampire. You can get a takeaway coffee from there. **2nd meetup point:** The Terminus Hotel/ Pub at Pyrmont at Midday Enjoy the walk from the Maritime Museum around the wharves at Pyrmont Bay; it is relatively flat and opportunities are around for street and architectural photography. Backgrounds include modern industrial designs, classic sandstone and boats moored to create interesting images. I feel that a compact or mirrorless camera with a fixed prime lens or two would do the job, anywhere between 28 to 50mm. It is open to both digital and film people. Experiment with different film saturations soft, standard, vivid, seipa or even monochrome within your digital camera menu. Alternatively, you could try black and white film around 400 ISO or ASA with a medium amount of grain to get that classic look. The idea is to have a camera that is relatively small to take discrete photos of people, running, walking their dog, fishing, involved in their conversations etc that tells a story or conveys a message through your images. Look for opportunities as you walk, there are plenty of seats on the walk where the subject may pass by while you’re sitting waiting for the image to present itself for your composition. The idea is to slow down and observe rather than rush to the second meetup point. The pub has an interesting history of past colourful characters and is one of the oldest Sydney public bars.
