Drunken Philosophy: "Hustle culture: are you free in the workplace?

Welcome to Drunken Philosophy, a casual, curious, social discussion club. Come grab a drink and a seat at The Oracle. Kind of late prompt but: this is from an article in "Philosophy Now" magazine. I concerns whether the modern capitalist economic system, called "hustle culture" in the article, only allows an individual to be as autonomous as the system needs him/her to be. Theodore Adorno said, "the individual is free to the extent to which the economic system required him to be autonomous." So people seem to be able to act freely, but their choices and maybe even their values are shaped by the requirements of the economic system. People are taught to control their wants, feelings and urges so as to be able to fit into work. Adorno and other thinkers argue that the Enlightenment rationality promised liberation but gradually turned into a new form of domination. I would add that we see this in the US university system that more and more is reducing or even eliminating areas of study (like philosophy) that do not directly train students for jobs. And more frighteningly: will AI eventually determine the value of workers? Come for the conversation, stay for the drinks, and bring your own philosophical questions.

Self-Defense Workshop by Darin Waugh

Join us for a **Martial Arts & Self Defense** workshop hosted by **Darin Waugh**, an original member of the school and author of multiple martial arts books, including one of our history: [The History & Practice of Do–Jung–Ishu: "The Art of Fighting"](https://www.lulu.com/shop/darin-waugh/the-history-practice-of-do-jung-ishu-the-art-of-fighting/ebook/product-1epnn759.html?page=1&pageSize=4). It will be held at **Tuttle Park (240 W Oakland Ave., Columbus, OH 43201)** on **September 20th @1pm.** Ages 18+. At Darin's workshop, you can expect a casual vibe and **hands-on education** of **efficient** and **effective** concepts and techniques from Do–Jung–Ishu's take on **Jeet Kune Do**, Bruce Lee's legacy. **Sticky Hands** **(Chi Sao)**, a method of controlling your opponent while still maintaining offensive pressure in the clench, is one such concept, and Darin Waugh is one of the best in the world to do it. What you are introduced to in this workshop can be taken with you and grown in future classes with us or wherever you prefer to train. The workshop will last as long as Darin stays to teach, and however long attendees decide to stick around and practice. The fee is **$10/attendee,** and **all proceeds go towards maintaining the club and for Darin's time.** Our shirts may be purchased at the event for $25, and they function as a **%50 discount** when worn to classes.
