80 Years of Martin and Lewis: The Caddy (1953)

On 22 July, I'll be screening [The Caddy (1953) at the Cinema Museum](https://cinemamuseum.org.uk/scheduled/80-years-of-martin-and-lewis-the-caddy-1953/). Tickets £10 Doors: 18:30 Introduction and Film: 19:30 This screening marks the 80th anniversary of Martin and Lewis (and the 70th of their split exactly 10 years later). Today, The Caddy is probably best remembered as the film that introduced ‘That’s Amore’. Upon release, it was one of sixteen slapstick features capitalising on the ever-expanding Martin and Lewis empire (one of three in 1953 alone!). Released at the height of the double act’s success, audiences were so hysterical over Dean and Jerry that director Norman Taurog described their response as “almost orgiastic”. Ostensibly a slapstick sports comedy, The Caddy is far more concerned with the tenuous co-dependence of its two leads than it is with golf or romance. If Martin and Lewis’ popularity was rooted in their boundary-smashing liveness and unpredictability, their films might seem like a shadow of their true brilliance. Yet The Caddy proves anything but inert, saturated with the same immediacy and intimacy that turned Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis into global superstars. The film will be preceded by an intro reflecting on Martin and Lewis’ career and legacy.
