New York Story Night #84

New York Story Night is a literary community event based in Manhattan founded to provide creative writers, amateur and professional alike, a stage on which to share their stories and an audience with which to road test their works. Consider an open mic for stand-up tragedy, stand-up horror, stand-up drama if you will. A night of bedtime stories for adults. **For those who wish to share a story, please arrive before 6:50pm and sign-up for a reading slot.** (Find Aïss at the front of the second floor event space.) For those who wish to be an audience, get a drink, find a favored spot, chit-chat with fellow story lovers if you like! At 7pm story night begins. **Each writer gets 20 minutes in front of the microphone. (15 minutes for the story + 5 minutes for workshop/Q&A with the audience)** We have a 10 minute intermission at the end of every hour. **Rules for stories:** * Stories must be under 15 mins (around 2,300 words) * All stories must be written pieces * Stories can be fiction or non-fiction but must contain a narrative arc * No poetry, no essays We encourage you to email us at newyorkstorynight@gmail.com if you have questions or concerns on if your story is a good fit for our event. In-Person Writing Session in NYC

So here's the deal: one of our members manages this performance space and has graciously offered it to us yet again. (Shout-out to Takeo! You da best!) We've met here twice before and have averaged nearly 40 people, so I'm expecting another robust crowd. The night before we meet, I'll email the details to everyone who's on the RSVP list. For now, in case it helps you plan better, know that this venue is not wheelchair accessible because you'll have to walk down one flight of stairs from the sidewalk. Also, there IS wifi but it's pretty slow. Also ALSO, there's gonna be 90 minutes at the start (6pm to 7:30pm) to hang before the writing. Feel free to bring drinks and snacks and of course we'll need to keep the space tidy. Writing group meeting in a funky art studio in the East 50s

And now, for something different . . . One of our members named Elle (who's not on Meetup) has been using a VERY cool/weird space in midtown as her art studio, and she's gotten permission from the owners to let this group use it for an evening. The night before we meet, I'll email all the details to everyone who's on the RSVP list, but here's some stuff that you should be aware of for now: 1. For liability purposes, you'll need to sign a digital waiver before heading upstairs. If you want to see the waiver before I send out the email, get in touch and I'll provide a link. 2. This place is not wheelchair accessible. We'll be meeting on the 4th floor, and while there IS an elevator, using it will require you to pass through a gap that's only 14.5 inches wide. (See what I mean about "funky"?) There's also a staircase with normal dimensions if you prefer to get three flights' worth of exercise. 3. There's no air conditioning, but there'll be a few fans. I would've waited to do this meeting in the fall or winter but Elle might not have it much longer, and it's such an unusual setup that I decided to go for it ASAP. 4. Elle requested that we have a 90-minute writing session, so let's do it! That'll happen from 6pm to 7:30pm. 5. We'll need to clear the space by 11pm sharp. Winterfat Writing Circle: problems of personhood

Winterfat Writing Circle is a subset of [Winterfat Presse](https://winterfatpresse.blogspot.com/). Our goal is to create intuitive spaces where writers and readers can enter into their body and re-imagine their self-experience, particularly through dissident ethics/poetics. Our editorial team draws from authors like Audre Lorde, Gwendolyn Brooks, and June Jordan. **This writing circle's theme is: "problems of personhood".** Each writing circle uses the same format, but addresses a different theme. We begin with brief introductions, and then collectively read a relevant piece of writing to the prompt, which our team crafts uniquely for each group. We review and discuss the prompt, then have individual writing time. This is followed by an optional open mic and shared reflection portion. Please bring something to sit on, a writing utensil and paper, and an open mind and heart! Maybe also a snack :) The event will last around two hours.
