CMG Special Event: MANHATTAN SHORT FILM FESTIVAL at the Gateway Film Center!

\* One World \* One Week \* One Festival \* Join us as we get together for a CMG special event and fun annual tradition: THE MANHATTAN SHORT FILM FESTIVAL! If you haven’t attended with us before, you’ll LOVE it! (And if you have attended before you probably already signed up!) This event showcases 10 short films selected from hundreds from around the globe! We'll view each of this year’s 10 short film finalists back-to-back then cast our ballots to help pick this year’s winner! Afterwards, we’ll get together for a bite, a drink and to chat about the shorts! Here are complete details for this year’s event: ABOUT THE FESTIVAL: THE MANHATTAN SHORT is the only event of its kind! This year’s Ten Finalists will screen across the world during a one-week period. Finalists are selected from hundreds of films submitted from across the globe with the winner determined by ballots cast by the audiences in each participating venue. Winning films will be announced after the festival and I’ll send an announcement to the group! All of this year’s finalists will be eligible in the Short Film categories at the 2026 Academy Awards. THIS YEAR’S FINALISTS: This year is extra special because for the first time in its history MANHATTAN SHORT has selected ten films from ten different countries, with films from USA, Ireland, Australia, South Africa, United Kingdom, Moldova, Russia, Cuba, Georgia and Mexico! The 2020 movie imagines a meeting between Muhammad Ali, Malcolm X, Sam Cooke, and Jim Brown on the night of Ali’s victory over Sonny Liston, where they reflect on their roles in the Civil Rights Movement. It is available on streaming services and as DVD in the Columbus Library System.

Oscar Season Kickoff: DIGGER at the Drexel Theatre!

Join us for an Oscar Watch film as we get together to see the satirical-dark-comedy, DIGGER! The film is written/directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu and stars Tom Cruise as the world’s most powerful man as he tries to save the world from the disaster he created. Here’s a description, trailer and our plan for this event: DESCRIPTION: The most powerful man in the world embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity's savior before the disaster he unleashed destroys everything. What are tokens, tensors, attention, quantization, and all those mysterious gigabytes of VRAM doing? And why does your GPU suddenly become the most important piece of hardware in the room? This talk takes a developer-friendly tour through the fundamentals of modern LLMs. We’ll try to demystify concepts like context windows, model quantization, and inference performance without requiring a PhD in linear algebra. Then we'll take those concepts out of the textbook and into the real world, looking at tools such as Ollama, LM Studio, and vLLM and what it takes to run useful models on your own hardware. By the end, you'll have a mental model for what an LLM is actually doing, how local inference works, and why sometimes the answer to "How much VRAM do I need?" is apparently "all of it." **YouTube Link** TBD

Shut Up & Write!™ Easton Town Center

We'll meet at The Capital One Café, 167 Easton Town Center, Space A-103. This is in the main mall where the Microsoft store used to be, on your left if you're standing at the bottom of the AMC Theater escalator. Join us on Saturday for an hour of uninterrupted wordmaking! • What we'll do Join us for an hour of writing! We’ve discovered that it’s strikingly helpful to write with other writers. See if it’s true for you at 10AM on Saturday mornings. Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done. SCHEDULE: 10:00 - SESSION 1: quick intros. 10:10 - timer starts: write for 1 hour. 11:10 - chat / take off / keep writing. OPTIONAL SOCIALIZING happens at 11A-11:30ish. Writing is very solitary. Connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing. BEING LATE IS OKAY: just show up and get settled, then check-in with me after the session.
