# Mocha Girls Read Los Angeles Book Club Meeting 📅 Date: Saturday, July 11 🕜 Time: 1:30 PM 📍 Location: Lore Bookstore Join the Los Angeles Chapter of Mocha Girls Read for an afternoon of books, conversation, and community as we gather to discuss our July Monthly Book Selection, *[These Ghosts Are Family](https://amzn.to/4v0shJg)*[ by Maisy Card.](https://amzn.to/4v0shJg) As part of our 2026 **Around the World** reading theme, July takes us to the Caribbean. This month's selection highlights the experiences of a Jamaican family whose lives span generations, countries, and cultures, making it our official Caribbean read of the year. Whether you have finished the book or are still reading, come prepared for a thoughtful discussion about family, identity, migration, generational trauma, secrets, and the lasting impact of the choices we make. ### About the Book Stanford Solomon’s shocking, thirty-year-old secret is about to change the lives of everyone around him. Stanford has done something no one could ever imagine. He is a man who faked his own death and stole the identity of his best friend. Stanford Solomon is actually Abel Paisley. And now, nearing the end of his life, Stanford is about to meet his firstborn daughter, Irene Paisley, a home health aide who has unwittingly shown up for her first day of work to tend to the father she thought was dead. These Ghosts Are Family revolves around the consequences of Abel’s decision and tells the story of the Paisley family from colonial Jamaica to present-day Harlem. There is Vera, whose widowhood forced her into the role of a single mother. There are two daughters and a granddaughter who have never known they are related. And there are others, like the houseboy who loved Vera, whose lives might have taken different courses if not for Abel Paisley’s actions. This “rich and layered story” (Kirkus Reviews) explores the ways each character wrestles with their ghosts and struggles to forge independent identities outside of the family and their trauma. The result is a “beguiling…vividly drawn, and compelling” (BookPage, starred review) portrait of a family and individuals caught in the sweep of history, slavery, migration, and the more personal dramas of infidelity, lost love, and regret. We will be at the picnic table area. Bring a beverage and a sun hat. We look forward to seeing you all. Please RSVP to let us know you'll be joining us.

Fish & Bear: The Most Interesting People You’ve Never Met - Burbank/Glendale

Mon, Jul 6, 12:50 AM
From Fish & Bear: The Most Interesting Conversations You'll Have.
5.0

The most enjoyable way to meet new people. Mostly listening, you'll hear our similarities and our uniqueness. Both peaceful & invigorating. **[We post our events on multiple platforms. Please RSVP at [fishandbear.net](http://fishandbear.net/) if you'd prefer to pay on the night.]([https://fishandbear.net](https://fishandbear.net/))** A Truly Invigorating Social Event, Where people - often strangers - meet and tell stories. Nobody knows what story they are going to tell. It's time to truly connect again in the way that only sitting in real life, with real people, telling real-life stories can. Storytelling is the capability we have used to connect with one another and create the modern world. And yet, especially on social media, we have reduced storytelling to story-selling and mostly share opinions rather than real-life experiences. Our events are simple, timed, unprepared story prompts that help everyone who listens connect to our unique and yet relatable experiences. Often, the stories told are intensely funny, sometimes emotional, but always interesting. I call them games rather than exercises because they are fun and often frivolous, but there's no competition and no one loses - except those who don't attend! 😀 **Arrive before the start.** [No Stress Hydro-Gardens](https://maps.app.goo.gl/P5tUAQkbz2Sd8Hk87) We have a lovely room at the back of this hydroponics and exotic plant store for our use. Please arrive on time so that we can start promptly at 6 pm. **Let the Games begin.** We will start with a couple of simple story rounds for the storytellers. The first is almost always 'The Story of your name' because everyone is **the** world's expert in living their life with their name. **Break!** We host these events to encourage connection and community, so this break is there to keep it light and cheerful. So stretch your legs, or stand in line 🚽! **Part Two.** Now that we all know this evening's storytellers, it is time to play a couple more story games to complete the structured part of the event. **The End!** There's a little time to chat with your new friends while we clear up and reset the room.
