A Saturday meetup at this location. The Hugh is at the Citicorp Building at 53 Street and Lexington Avenue in Manhattan. The 6, E and M trains stop there. From the subway, go thru the revolving doors and walk straight down. We'll be sitting at one of the large tables. Look for a table with games on it. You should check mta.info for changes in train services which often occur on weekends. NOTE - most of the atrium venues are closed on weekends. You might want to pack a sandwich or snacks and drink to bring with you. There are nearby places outside to get food and drinks. Okay, you know what to do.

The fine art of baloney detection

The fine art of baloney detection

Mon, Sep 21, 11:00 PM
From New York City Skeptics – Science & Critical Thinking
4.6

Welcome to “**Skeptic Dinners**,” a series of events facilitated by Prof. [Massimo Pigliucci](https://figsinwintertime.substack.com/), a philosopher and biologist at the City College of New York. The idea is similar to that of the [Ancient Greek symposia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symposium): let’s get a small number of like-minded people together over drinks and food and discuss interesting subjects! *** Three decades ago the astronomer and skeptic Carl Sagan published his famous essay on baloney detection, part of his book [The Demon-Haunted World](https://bookshop.org/a/80309/9780345409461), subtitled "Science as a Candle in the Dark." For this discussion, we revisit Sagan's baloney detection kit and update it a bit on the basis of an article written by Massimo Pigliucci for a recent issue of Skeptical Inquirer. Suggested readings / viewing: \* The Fine Art of Baloney Detection—Sagan’s Essay Three Decades Later (available for [free download as pdf here](https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/pegsgii5r4srdtyb3nixh/The-Fine-Art-of-Baloney-Detection-Sagan-s-Essay-Three-Decades-Later-Skeptical-Inquirer.PDF?rlkey=7py4zqz5pck0pwim2u0jzlj64&st=n39grbyp&dl=0)) \*\*\* NOTE: **new location!** Also NOTE: Since these are dinner events at a restaurant, which require reservations, **you are expected to consume some food**. Also please **treat your rsvp seriously** and update it if you decide not to come. If you don’t and we end up with empty seats, **you may be barred from some of the next meeting**. Thanks for understanding!

SMC Trail Work Volunteer Day

SMC Trail Work Volunteer Day

Sun, Sep 13, 1:00 PM
From South Mountain Conservancy Activities Meetup Group
4.8

**TRAIL WORK will continue rerouting the Hogenauer Trail** (we are making progress!) up the slope and away from recently installed property fences. **Meet At:** Dog Park/ Wildflower Preserve, 11 Bear Lane, Maplewood. From there, we will walk to Crater View on Crest drive and then to the Hogenauer trail work site. (Note: While we normally meet the first Sudnay of each month, this volunteer day was shifted after the Labor Day weekend.) Trail work is physically challenging but very satisfying as we use hand tools to build and repair trails. Participants must be 15+ years. Those younger than 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Participants **should wear long pants** due to [ticks](https://www.somocon.org/?page_id=193928&fb) and thron bushes and sturdy shoes, and bring gloves (though backup gloves will be available). Tools, water, and a snack will be provided. (Registration is not required though if you sign up on Meetup, it helps us know how many tools to bring.) Only heavy, steady rain cancels.
