TRADITIONAL GOURD WORKSHOP

To attend and for exact location, Register [HERE](https://www.schoolofself-reliance.com/event/traditional-gourd-workshop/) [NOTE: Besides each of you working on a gourd, we will also share some lessons in making triggers for traps, such as with the quail trap, and you will get to try some wild food at this class. You will learn how to clean and process a traditional gourd grown for utilitarian purposes. These are the hard shelled gourds that probably originated in Africa, and were common all across the American Southwest. Your job will be to clean, and learn how to cut and then clean the gourd. The seeds you can take home to grow. There are artists who make some equisite items from these gourds, and you might be one of them. However, we will focus on the fundamentals, and just a few hints about the artistic embellishments. If time, we will have a short plant walk and possibly prepare something you can eat in your gourd. We will supply all the tools needed, but if you have your own knife, hack saw, files, etc., please bring them. Bring water to drink and a snack if required.

Hello Folks, We will be hosting another meetup at Astro Karaoke. We will meet at the main seating in the middle area where the tables are. We will collect $25 at the door for purchasing sake. Update: We have some cool sake not available in the US that Kudosan has brought back from his trip to Japan last week! To minimize plastic waste guests are encouraged to bring their own personal sampling glass for the sake. During the first two decades of the 20th Century Pasadena became the home of millionaires (who probably would be billionaires in today’s dollars). Chewing gum magnate William Wrigley Jr., David B. Gamble, son of James Gamble, founder of Proctor and Gamble, and Adolphus Busch of Budweiser fame, were some of the wealthiest families in the country. Many of these upper-class residents lived on Orange Grove Blvd. which, due to this extreme affluence, was nicknamed ‘Millionaire’s Row’. As ‘Millionaire’s Row’ grew, with dozens of opulent mansions of eight or ten bedrooms lining the street, the need for hired help increased dramatically. Mary Gamble and Ada Wrigley were not going to wash dishes and clothes, nor prepare meals for their families. Those laborious tasks were given to domestic workers who lived in the residences of the rich in modest servants’ quarters. And they were paid low wages for the difficult and arduous work required to maintain these enormous estates.
