**We are hosting a Monthly Movie Discussion Happy Hour at the Flying Pig Bistro in the Mission every 3rd THURSDAY of the month!** Join us for an evening of movie talk with your fellow movie lovers. We'll start by forming groups where people will take turns sharing 1-2 quick movie reviews of what they've watched recently (no spoilers unless the group decides it's ok). After group sharing is done we'll mix and mingle for general discussion. Please come prepared to share at least one movie review with your group. The Flying Pig has a great selection of beverages (including non-alcoholic) as well as food for dinner or snacking. Please consider purchasing something to support the Flying Pig since we are not paying for the venue. Let me know if you have any questions!

Or see Zabis video below.. or the link for the Facebook live events below as well.. Here is a video of one of our meetings with Zabi https://www.youtube.com/live/SlWax8qRsJ8?si=3YIBqln5eA4lZJbL DONATION BASED - no Paypal button yet so.. Zabi will be leading this next gathering, where we will sit and share in the light of the Nondual orientation, perhaps a short meditation at the beginning. There is also a big screen TV in the room for viewing when that naturally arises and potentially for Zoom as well. This is a weekly gathering which could land on any weekend day or weekday as we go along. You will be notified usually the same week. Some of them will be radical nondual so simply look to see what type of gathering it will be. We do embrace all angles of Nonduality and yet often will host many radical Nonduality speakers as well. We look not so much to label all of this as to see the beauty of simply tuning in, and seeing the clarity of what this remarkable reality actually is. I look forward to seeing everyone who loves what we love, and is nurtured by these in person, gatherings and potential zoom, live YouTube and live Facebook as well. Again, see links below.. July Podcast Club Discussion: Overtourism

July Podcast Club Discussion: Overtourism

Thu, Jul 16, 2:00 AM
From East Bay Podcast Discussion Club
4.9

Overtourism is a buzzword lately, but also having real impacts on the lives of both the people living in the most-visited places and anyone traveling. Looking forward to exploring (😉) this topic with you all! **How It Works:** * We often follow the Podcast Brunch Club listening lists covering a different topic each month. Members can also make suggestions for future topics. **Be sure to check the monthly Meetup event to see what we're listening to!** * Listening lists are composed of episode selections related to the month's theme and are pulled from a variety of shows. And we love to include some recommendations too! * Finishing the recommended listening list is not a requirement to attend. Listen to as many or few of the suggested episodes as you would like. * We will have an unstructured, informal discussion of the selections and the month's theme. **This Month's Topic:** *This playlist was curated by Shannon Martin, founder of the Valencia, Spain PBC chapter, and Jeannie Dilger, a Valencia member who helps women and queer folks over 50 travel Europe solo via AdventuringAlone.com.* We live in the heart of it here in Spain, and see our city struggling with housing prices and covered in “Tourist Go Home Signs” (and being just down the coast from Barcelona, where the infamous water gun incidents and more have brought international press attention). However, as we hope the list conveys, it’s a complicated issue with many angles, from policy to practicalities and travel tips. **Here's a link to the Spotify playlist:** https://bit.ly/spotify-overtourism **The Playlist - Suggested Episodes:** * ***What Now? With Trevor Noah*: [“Revenge of the Tourists with Rajan Datar”](https://open.spotify.com/episode/0dYlYaYWQJR9fmAtvF2lKQ?si=1lMWjJ8kR0SkbIfxX600zA%E2%80%9D)** *(September 2024, 49 min)* This discussion with travel journalist Rajan Datar covers all the highlights and news on this topic, with a dose of humor that Trevor Noah brings. It also dives into more of the subtleties around globalization, policies, and more. * ***Peak Travel*: [“Bhutan’s Radical Approach to Overtourism”](https://open.spotify.com/episode/1ZOwLnlCrwBFw2YVFyUWa8?si=RsziQj-USNCrgHk4BczTYQ%E2%80%9D)** *(March 2025, 21 min)* Many places allow tourists to visit with little restrictions. But Bhutan, a tiny, land-locked country has implemented a “high-value, low-impact” tourism model, including a fee that tourists have to pay each day that they visit. As more destinations grapple with the effects of overtourism, what can Bhutan teach us about how to manage it? * ***The Thoughtful Travel Podcast*: [“333 Overtourism”](https://open.spotify.com/episode/7zrqTWGoK6Wo7gMe0g7AOk?si=l8w1jdjARCWcnaf8UGX-Ug%E2%80%9D)** *(January 2025, 24 min)* Overtourism is a buzz word of late, but not a good one. We’ve all read about the cities and regions being overrun by tourists, who might be damaging natural or historical sights, or making an area unaffordable for its original residents to stay in. In this episode three guests with an interest in overtourism offer their thoughts on the topic. * ***Vacation Rental Scale-Up*: [“Airbnb Reframes Overtourism-And Puts Hotels on the Defensive”](https://open.spotify.com/episode/2MRsYPdOflx3pOrlooYKbD?si=z4Gc7RFgQByCpWm8BbVT1w%E2%80%9D)** *(June 2025, 9 min)* Take it with a grain of salt as this podcast is for vacation rental owners, but we constantly hear Airbnb being blamed for housing cost issues as related to overtourism. This podcast shares how Airbnb has reacted and some interesting statistics around vacation rentals and hotels, which adds a perspective to consider. * ***National Park After Dark*: [“The Last Tourist with Bruce Poon Tip”](https://open.spotify.com/episode/5GTWGeuy0bozACXAO06xaQ?si=DwjtQIQ-Q3etsym5VQ997A%E2%80%9D)** *(July 2022, 52 min)* Bruce Poon Tip, founder of G Adventures and Executive Producer of The Last Tourist documentary, discusses the negative impacts of overtourism, animal cruelty in entertainment, and responsible, sustainable travel that benefits local communities. ***Bonus podcast episodes:*** * *[What in the World](https://open.spotify.com/episode/3cX6IziaHD0h5sDjRL73VH?si=TRpMgVQvQdyrljeJrz_ruw)*[: “Why Water Pistols Are Being Used to Fight Overtourism”](https://open.spotify.com/episode/3cX6IziaHD0h5sDjRL73VH?si=TRpMgVQvQdyrljeJrz_ruw) *(July 2025, 12 min)* Water pistols have become a symbol of resistance against overtourism in several cities around the world. This summer local residents in Barcelona, Spain, have been using them again to show their frustration at how mass tourism is impacting their city; from housing to overcrowding. * *[Peak Travel](https://open.spotify.com/episode/1s5VwGlnStOTI8bTkO9UCO?si=b60kmn5hSGW8PWAQ4l2RYw)*[: “You Don’t Want to End Up Like Venice”](https://open.spotify.com/episode/1s5VwGlnStOTI8bTkO9UCO?si=b60kmn5hSGW8PWAQ4l2RYw) *(August 2024, 29 min)* Venice has long been considered the poster child for overtourism in Europe. As ever-growing waves of tourists aboard boats and cruise ships jeopardize the delicate city, residents hope a new entry fee will offer relief. * *[Reuter’s Econ World](https://open.spotify.com/episode/735XP9apgf6YoclJVCjsmw?si=_Wj94eIURg-1l46xHQiWXA)*[: “Overtourism”](https://open.spotify.com/episode/735XP9apgf6YoclJVCjsmw?si=_Wj94eIURg-1l46xHQiWXA) *(July 2025, 38 min)* A look at the economic trade-offs at play in mass tourism as backlash grows in places like Spain and Japan.
