Art Deco Walk: a spotters guide

Did you know that 2025 marked a special anniversary for art deco? While the style dates back to the 1910s, art deco got its name as an abbreviation for the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels (International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts), which took place in Paris in 1925. An entire century later, art deco’s glamourous craftmanship, bold geometric shapes and opulent colours are as admired as ever. Proclaimed the greatest art deco building in the world was, drum roll please… **The Daily Express Building** on Fleet Street. The Grade II\*-listed site, which was designed by Ellis & Clarke in 1932 - has now shed its builders mask and the refurb is nearing completion. We will take a 5-6 mile walk from London Bridge to Trafalgar Square looking at Art Deco architectural masterpieces in London. End with a drink and food near Seven Dials in Covent Garden. This meet up was very popular last time, Come with me an on this enjoyable meetup, we will meet at Costa Coffee at Walthamstow Central at 11 am for a hot drink, after our hot drink, we will make our way to the William Morris Gallery., where the entrance is free. The William Morris Gallery is a museum devoted to the life and works of William Morris, an English Arts and Crafts designer and early socialist. It is located in Walthamstow at Water House, a substantial Grade II\* listed Georgian home. The extensive grounds of the building are a public park, known as Lloyd Park. Curiously, we have come across William Morris on other Meetup walks, namely Red House in Bexleyheath and Merton Abbey Mills in Colliers Wood. Water House in Walthamstow is where William Morris lived as a teenager. After visiting the William Morris Gallery, we will get a bus to The Ferry Boat Inn for lunch. For anyone who does not wish to have lunch in the pub there is an opportunity to visit Walthamstow Wetlands, London Wildlife Trust, across the road , where there is a cafe and tables outside where you can eat your own lunch. After lunch we will have a short walk around some of Walthamstow Wetlands then walk to Tottenham Hale Station, where you can get Overground and Underground trains. £7 meet up fee on arrival {please have the right change}. Talk: Slow Horses and Architecture, with Saul Metzstein

I found this amazing talk on Eventbrite, organised by the Temple Bar Association. The gate that used to span Fleet Street where it meets the Strand, was taken down and was eventually re-built on Paternoster Square (only in 2004!). If you saw and loved Slow Horses on AppleTV+ then you know the appeal to hear from Sam Metzstein who directed season 3 and 5, he talks about the role architecture played on the show. Here is more about him and the talk: “Saul Metzstein is an award winning director of feature films and television dramas. He directed seasons 3 and 5 of Slow Horses. Saul Metzstein studied architecture at Cambridge before taking on production roles on Trainspotting and Shallow Grave. He subsequently directed documentaries on Gillespie, Kidd & Coia and five episodes of the seventh series of Doctor Who. Saul’s direction of Slow Horses is recognised for its incorporation of architecture as an important part of the narrative. Episodes used the Barbican as an elaborate framing device for characters, creating a heightened sense of tension and allowing a greater connection with the chararcters. Scenes shot inside a secure underground vault increased the claustrophobic nature of the incident, with the feeling that not only forces of evil were closing in, but so were the walls of the building. Open House London

London Open House is the annual festival of architecture and history where government buildings, historic houses, workplaces, schools and private houses normally closed to the public open their doors for free tours for one weekend of the year. This year our tour will take in Walthamstow village (Mini Holland Cycle heaven), Hackney and London Fields. Venues to be visited follows - we can adapt itinerary as the day unfolds. We aim to bring art into our community, to support local artists. 25 BRUNSWICK STREET, E17 9NB. Full refurbishment and extension of a Victorian terraced house in Walthamstow Village. The project reconfigures a previously compromised layout to create a brighter, more coherent home, improving its relationship to the street and garden. 237 SHERNHALL STREET, E17 9HX. Architect will guide visitors on this newly created house. This project has transformed an unloved basement into a light filled, sustainable, calming home. A deep retrofit using low-carbon materials, a natural swimming pool, and a green roof. 2 BELGRAVE ROAD, E17 8QE. Luis Barragan inspired design for the interior of a typical late Victorian house in East London. The use of bold vivid colour banishes the sterility that can accompany modernism without the loss of its hallmark simplicity and elegant line. 1 BODNEY ROAD, E8 1AY. Bodney Road Studios is home to a range of practitioners working in the built environment including architectural photographers, graphic designers and planners. For Open House we will open the studios with a programme of exhibitions and events. SUTTON HOUSE, 2 Homerton High St. Option to visit this National Trust 16th century merchant adventurers mansion. Hackney Empire is a grade II\* listed building. The theatre was built as a music hall in 1901, designed by the architect Frank Matcham. Unit 13 is a space of many parts - office, workshop, venue, exhibition space, and screening room. What is authentic vs synthetic? Extreme points of view don't help you day to day. They keep you wrapped up in debates about process while the actual work still needs to get done, and the question around quality and value stay in question. In this session, Jason and Vic explore what's real: which skills stay irreplaceable, when AI genuinely saves time vs. when it wastes it, and how to build capability that keeps you relevant without losing what makes you valuable.
