The Toronto Artist's Way Meetup Monthly Meetup

Mon, Jul 20, 11:00 PM
From The Toronto Artist's Way Meetup
4.5

The purpose of the group, based on the book The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron, is for people to meet and talk about their artistic challenges in any field (painting, writing, music etc.) and encourage each other to break their creative blocks and fulfill themselves in their art. If you find people who are sympathetic, you may want to form your own group, meeting regularly to explore the book and supporting each other in their artistic journeys. I have gone through 2 such clusters and can say that it is a very powerful experience. Why not come to a meeting and see for yourself?

Midnight Martial Arts Presents: Jab–Cross!!!

Midnight Martial Arts Presents: Jab–Cross!!!

Sat, Jul 25, 4:30 AM
From Midnight Martial Arts

## **Beginner Boxing Fundamentals** Midnight Martial Arts starts at midnight — so we’re meeting under the city lights for a late-night beginner boxing fundamentals session, under the lights of **Mel Lastman Square**. This first, very much **weather-dependent** meetup, is a simple, non-contact deep dive into one of the most important combinations in striking: **the jab–cross**. Whether you stand square, bladed, orthodox, southpaw, or you’re still figuring that out, we’ll break down the basics together: stance, guard, footwork, rhythm, balance, distance, and how the jab and cross work across different striking styles. ### **Why Mel Lastman Square at midnight?** Yeah, fair question. Since this is the very first event, I genuinely don't know if anyone will show up or ten. And honestly, even if I booked a world-class facility (Which would be kind of hard because most of them are closed), I'm not sure that would change the turnout for a first meetup. So for now I'm keeping it simple, free, and low-commitment — an open, well-lit public space where anyone who's curious can sign up and we can see if this thing has legs. If there's interest, finding a proper venue is the natural next step. ### **What this is not** This is not sparring. This is not a fight club. This is a relaxed, beginner-friendly technique lab for night owls, martial arts nerds, and curious people who want to move, learn, and talk technique in a low-pressure environment. ### **What we’ll cover** Basic boxing stance and guard How to throw a clean jab How to throw a clean cross How the jab and cross connect together Footwork, weight shift, rhythm, and distance Orthodox vs. southpaw basics A few style variations and discussion points ### **Got a martial arts rabbit hole you want to explore?** Bring it in. If there’s a specific boxing style, technique, or idea that connects to the jab–cross, feel free to share it during the session so we can work it into the discussion. A short video, a clear question, or a few notes can go a long way. If it’s about another area of martial arts like grappling, kicking, clinch, or anything outside the main theme. That’s welcome too, but we’ll try to save those bigger side quests for the end so we can keep the main session focused. I’m always happy to get into the weeds about these things, but I’m not an expert in every corner of martial arts, so a little context helps a lot; You might teach me something, and I'm here to learn too. **Time:** 12:30 a.m. – 2:30 a.m. **Location:** Mel Lastman Square **Safety and well-being are the are number one priority!!!**

Learn how to create amazing cinematic images in small spaces. This is a great chance to shoot in a historic space with an amazing model and some great Elinchrom equipment. **Location: Scadding Cabin, Exhibition Place**Our Photography Lighting Workshop takes place at the historic **Scadding Cabin** — Toronto’s oldest surviving house. Built in 1794 by John Scadding, an immigrant from Devonshire, the log cabin originally stood on the east side of the Don River. It served as his home until 1796, after which it was used as a farm building for decades. In 1879, to celebrate the very first Toronto Industrial Exhibition (now the CNE), the cabin was dismantled, moved, and rebuilt by the York Pioneers at its current site in Exhibition Place. Steeped in over two centuries of history, the cabin offers a rustic, atmospheric backdrop perfect for exploring lighting techniques in photography. We will have a wonderful model onsite to pose and act like a Pioneer at home in the evening, this is a chance to learn some great small space lighting and posing techniques. We look forward to seeing you at the upcoming event in July. ![](https://static.wixstatic.com/media/1eaf19_1473405303c24789b96ddc6ebc403a81~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_144,h_192,al_c,q_80,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,blur_2,enc_auto/1eaf19_1473405303c24789b96ddc6ebc403a81~mv2.jpg) ![](https://static.wixstatic.com/media/1eaf19_de06f0a742dc46aba15ed7a9c000c6e7~mv2.png/v1/fill/w_1018,h_830,al_c,q_90,enc_auto/1eaf19_de06f0a742dc46aba15ed7a9c000c6e7~mv2.png)PHOTO SUMMER CAMP 2026 is here!
