Making the case for service design

Making the case for service design

How do you communicate the value of service design at your workplace? Where does your team stand, **and** what is your role within it? We all know service design creates value, but pinpointing exactly *where* your org stands, and what role you should be playing to move it forward, is a different skill entirely. This session is about getting clearer on that. **Format:** Design jam **What to expect:** * A quick icebreaker * Opening context — a fast recap of the article and why it matters * A spotlight share — one person walks us through where their own org sits on the model, and what that's actually looked like in practice * Main activity — working solo, then in pairs, then as a full table * A quick close — one small thing to try shifting this month **To get ahead:** Read the [Service Design Maturity Model article;](https://service-design-network.org/community_article/the-service-design-maturity-model-a-strategic-framework-to-embed-service-design-into-an-organisation) it's a quick one, and it'll give us a shared language for the night. The model breaks organizational SD maturity into five stages Explore, Prove, Scale, Integrate, Thrive) and tracks how a service designer's role shifts through each: from scout > doer > trainer > facilitator > leader. No need to have it all figured out before you arrive. Just come ready to think out loud with a few new people. See you there!

The Grand Finale of Our Community Photo Summer Camp Series Get ready for a very special photography experience as West Toronto Photography Group takes over one of Exhibition Place’s most spectacular historic spaces for the finale of our 2026 Community Photo Summer Camp series! ## Link for tickets -https://www.wtpg.ngo/event-details/community-photo-summer-camp-finale-pwyc-workshop-at-automotive-building-during-cne ## About the event # ART DECO, LIGHT & FORM ### The Grand Finale of Our Community Photo Summer Camp Series Get ready for a very special photography experience as **West Toronto Photography Group** takes over one of Exhibition Place’s most spectacular historic spaces for the **finale of our 2026 Community Photo Summer Camp series!** For this workshop, we’re bringing together **architecture, fashion, creative styling and professional studio lighting** inside the breathtaking **Automotive Building at Exhibition Place**. Built in **1929**, the Automotive Building is a remarkable piece of Toronto architectural history. Designed by Toronto architect Douglas Kertland during the height of the Art Deco era, its bold geometric forms, elegant Beaux-Arts influences and grand exhibition spaces were originally created to showcase the automobile. At its opening, it was described as the largest structure in North America designed exclusively for displaying passenger vehicles. And now, nearly a century later, we're going to put it to a very different use: **making photographs.** ![](https://static.wixstatic.com/media/1eaf19_60fb64d4e97f4bf48a6c1ce659c96f77~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_767,h_528,al_c,lg_1,q_85,enc_auto/1eaf19_60fb64d4e97f4bf48a6c1ce659c96f77~mv2.jpg) ## ✨ LIGHT. FASHION. ARCHITECTURE. We're bringing some serious lighting firepower to this workshop, including **Elinchrom 5 flashes**, giving participants the opportunity to work with professional lighting equipment and explore how controlled light can transform both a subject and an architectural environment. Adding to the creative experience, designer **Adrianna Fulop** will be styling our model in a stunning custom look designed to complement the character, scale and drama of this incredible building. We'll experiment with dramatic lighting, directional light, shadow, shape and composition while using the Automotive Building's architecture as our enormous studio. Think **Art Deco glamour meets contemporary fashion photography**. And because the **Canadian National Exhibition is happening at the same time**, your workshop experience also includes access to the CNE after the evening workshop. That means you can make a full photographic adventure out of the evening—exploring Exhibition Place, photographing the CNE and taking advantage of all the visual possibilities surrounding the workshop after. ![](https://static.wixstatic.com/media/1eaf19_7f326a11584843eb8ea1f9c84fabceea~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_1125,h_1421,al_c,q_85,enc_auto/1eaf19_7f326a11584843eb8ea1f9c84fabceea~mv2.jpg) ## 📸 OUR COMMUNITY PHOTO SUMMER CAMP FINALE This is the **LAST Community Photo Summer Camp event of the summer**—and we're going out with a bang! As with our summer series, this is a **Pay What You Can community photography event**, designed to make professional photography education and creative opportunities accessible to as many photographers as possible. We're limiting the workshop to **just 12 photographers**. That small-group format means more shooting time, more opportunities to work with the lighting setups, more questions answered and more individual attention from the instructor. ![](https://static.wixstatic.com/media/1eaf19_7080a31f2487473387e85dd221b9f87d~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_1127,h_1418,al_c,q_85,enc_auto/1eaf19_7080a31f2487473387e85dd221b9f87d~mv2.jpg) ### ONLY 12 SPOTS — PAY WHAT YOU CAN There is **no fixed cost workshop fee**. Choose what you can afford to pay and help us continue bringing accessible photography education and community arts programming to Toronto. This workshop includes access to the CNE grounds in the evening after the workshop ## THE WORKSHOP TEAM **Instructor:** Phil Sutherland **Designer/Stylist:** Adrianna Fulop **Model:** To be announced **Assistant:** Volunteer to be announced ## WHAT YOU'LL EXPLORE This is an intermediate-level lighting workshop focused on creating strong, intentional photographs using the relationship between **light, shadow, fashion, architecture and form**. We'll explore: * Professional Elinchrom flash techniques * Lighting large architectural spaces * Working with directional and dramatic light * Balancing ambient light with flash * Creating shape and dimension with light * Using architecture as a compositional element * Fashion and editorial-style photography * Working collaboratively with a model and stylist * Developing creative lighting setups rather than simply copying a formula * Making the most of a challenging and visually spectacular location Most importantly, **you'll be shooting**. This isn't a workshop where you spend three hours watching someone else make photographs. ## THE AUTOMOTIVE BUILDING The Automotive Building is one of the hidden architectural gems of Exhibition Place. Opened in 1929 during Toronto's fascination with the automobile, the building originally housed the CNE's National Motor Show. During the Second World War it was even used by the Royal Canadian Navy as **HMCS York**. Today, its dramatic interior, monumental scale and distinctive period architecture make it an extraordinary location for photography. We're incredibly excited to have the opportunity to bring our community into this historic space and see what we can create together. ## WHAT TO BRING Please bring: * DSLR, mirrorless or medium-format camera * Your preferred lenses * Fully charged batteries * Freshly formatted memory card(s) * A general-purpose lens * Pen and paper if you'd like to take notes **Tripods and camera supports are not required.** ### WIRELESS TRIGGERS We provide wireless triggers for most mainstream camera systems. If you're unsure whether your camera is compatible, contact us before the workshop and we'll be happy to confirm. ## MODEL RELEASE A **West Toronto Photography Group model release** will be provided to each participant. The release covers non-commercial photography and images created for educational and training purposes. The model will sign the releases, and printed copies will be provided to participating photographers. ## ABOUT WEST TORONTO PHOTOGRAPHY GROUP **West Toronto Photography Group is an Indigenous-run, not-for-profit arts organization** dedicated to supporting photographers, sharing knowledge and making photography and arts programming accessible to the community. Our workshops are about more than learning technical skills. They're about **meeting other photographers, experimenting, building confidence, creating new work and having a great time making photographs together.** ## ONE LAST SUMMER SHOOT. ONE AMAZING LOCATION. We've spent the summer photographing, learning and exploring Toronto together. Now we're bringing the series to one of Exhibition Place's most spectacular historic buildings for a finale that combines **Art Deco architecture, fashion, professional lighting and the energy of the CNE.** **Only 12 spots. Pay What You Can. Professional Elinchrom lighting. An incredible designer. A stunning location. And one last chance to make photographs with the WTPG community this summer.** **Come join us for the finale. Let's make some magic with light.** Thank you to Exhibition Place for access to this amazing building, Thank you to CNE for the passes and Elinchrom for the amazing flash gear.
