![[FILM MEETUP] Season 3 Challenge 6 (S3C6) Screening!](https://secure-content.meetupstatic.com/images/classic-events/535263704/600x338.webp?w=3840)
[FILM MEETUP] Season 3 Challenge 6 (S3C6) Screening!
Sat, Aug 29, 5:00 PMJoin us on **Saturday, August 29th** at BRIC for our sixth screening of Season 3! We'll be watching the incredible short films made for this challenge, and kicking off the seventh challenge for the season! **In order to keep the group going as it grows into new spaces, we are accepting donations at a suggested price of $20. Our mission to keep filmmaking free and accessible to all remains the same, so these funds go strictly towards operating costs. This donation is not required to attend, but your contributions go towards a great cause.** Submit films for Challenge 6 [HERE](https://shortcutsnyc.com/submit) **Deadline to submit is Thursday, August 27th by 11:59pm.** Challenge Rules for S3C6 (July 18 - August 29): * Rule 1 (Form): **Match Cut** * Rule 2 (Wildcard): **Comedy** **For S3C6, you have until August 29 to shoot a short comedy that has at least one match cut. Get creative and ask yourself: How can you subvert expectations with these elements?** * ***NOTE: If these guidelines are not met there is a high probability that your film will not be shown. Short Cuts is a learning community so you MUST learn what these rules are before planning for your film. We prioritize films that are submitted on time, are 5 minutes and under, and have the director present. Films that are submitted on time and follow the rules will be shown in ascending runtime order, and then everything submitted late will be after. No generative AI films or films largely enhanced by generative AI.*** \*\*\* At the end of the event, we will provide everyone with two randomly drawn rules from a hat as guidelines for participating in future challenges. Afterwards, you will have the opportunity to create short films following these rules. At the next meeting, you will get the opportunity to show off your film, watch what others have made, and receive the next challenge's randomly drawn rules! Note that **no** experience is required, and all you need is a camera and a way to edit and upload your film. **Short Cuts** is a group of independent filmmakers challenging themselves to create short films every \~4 weeks following a number of randomly drawn rules. Each meeting, filmmakers have the opportunity to show off their films and watch others, as well as draw the rules for the next film challenge. This group welcomes any experience level, from those who have never touched a camera, written a script, or acted in a film to seasoned veterans looking for a challenge. **DONATE:** [https://www.nyfa.org/projects/project-info/?id=CA2043](https://www.nyfa.org/projects/project-info/?id=CA2043) **INSTAGRAM:** [https://www.instagram.com/shortcutsny/](https://www.instagram.com/shortcutsny/) **DISCORD:** [https://discord.gg/XQud4Hqeen](https://discord.gg/XQud4Hqeen) **WEBSITE:** [https://shortcutsnyc.com](https://shortcutsnyc.com/)

Data exploration of Pixar films: Which one is the best?
Tue, Aug 11, 11:00 PM**[External registration](https://nyhackr.org/?utm_source=nyhackr)** required at **[nyhackr](https://nyhackr.org/?utm_source=nyhackr)**. This month we have the long awaited Pixar talk from Eric Leung. Thank you to **[NYU](https://steinhardt.nyu.edu/priism?utm_source=nyhackr)** for hosting us. Everybody attending must **[RSVP](https://nyhackr.org/?utm_source=nyhackr)** through the registration form at **[nyhackr](https://nyhackr.org/?utm_source=nyhackr)**. There is a charge for in-person and virtual tickets are free. Space is extremely limited and in-person registration closes at 3 PM the day of the talk. **About the Talk:** Pixar makes beloved films, like Toy Story, Cars, and Inside Out. But which one is the best? Which franchise is the best? In this light-hearted but informative talk, Eric will go over an R data package he's created called {pixarfilms}. Eric will share some of his insights in answering some basic and not-so-basic questions he's had about Pixar films. For example, how have they done in the box office, and how they rank across critics on the internet and media. This latter ranking is done by consensus, where I'll aggregate rankings across different sources to come up with a data-backed, consensus ranking of Pixar films. The talk will also briefly highlight data challenges in curating the data and also highlight other data that can be found in the R package. **About Eric:** Eric is a senior data scientist and "small-batch data architect", where they have spent years measuring marketing effectiveness for iconic media brands including ESPN and ABC. Currently deepening their expertise in statistical programming, Eric is actively applying Bayesian methods and causal inference to both large-scale business problems and artisanal curation projects, such as structuring data for the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens and building a comprehensive Pixar film database. They are an active member in the New York data community and draws on a former work life as a computational biologist to contribute to open-source data and web development communities. The venue doors open at **6:30 PM America/New_York** where we will continue **[enjoying pizza](https://nyhackr.org/pizza.html?utm_source=nyhackr)** together (we encourage the virtual audience to have pizza as well). The talk, and **[livestream](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2-hKemnrmVCH_29duyJ26A?utm_source=nyhackr)**, begins at **7:00 PM America/New_York**. Remember, **register at [nyhackr](https://nyhackr.org/?utm_source=nyhackr)**.
