Let's go to the California Avocado Festival in Carpinteria by Train!

What could be more quintessentially California than a festival paying tribute to the Avocado, full of different guacamoles, and getting there on the Pacific Surfliner? This is the 40th year they've been having this festival. There is even Avocado ice cream! Entry to the Festival is free, and the booths are sponsored by local non-profits to raise money for their worthy causes. We've done this trip a couple of times, and it's always been fun. This unique festival is in Carpinteria, only a couple of blocks from the Carpinteria Amtrak station. It's one of the largest festivals in California, with three days of fabulous food and terrific music. [https://avofest.com/](https://avofest.com/) In case you didn't know, Santa Barbara County is the third largest avocado producer in North America, with Carpinteria being a major contributor. As the Festival has grown, so do the number of participants and festival-goers. In past years, over forty non-profit groups benefited by catering to 100,000 avocado visitors. The California Avocado Festival™ itself is a non-profit group that generates its own operating revenue each year. The annual event is completely organized by a committee of volunteers, and includes one part-time staff person. Our group will take the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner from Union Station in Downtown Los Angeles, to Carpinteria. We'll walk to the Festival from the Amtrak station, just a few blocks. Ticket prices: Senior ($30 Coach) There are two areas to park at Union Station. One, East, is $8 for the day, the other, West, is $16 for the day. See the map in the photo. The Union Station web site says the West area has limited parking, so it might be best to plan to park in the East structure. We can form carpools closer to the event date. Tuesday Griffith Park Night Hike - 3 Mile Junction Hike

Join us for this midweek get-away. I've done this hike a several times and it's a nice alternative to Beaudry. This MODERATELY-PACED hike will take about 2.5 to 3 hours and is 4 to 5 miles. We walk up a fire road. Bring WATER, hiking shoes, hiking poles and an extra layer. Bring a head lamp. Arrive 10 to 15 earlier, we leave exactly on time. If you cannot make it, please update your RSVP. **How to get there:** Take the Los Feliz/Crystal Springs entrance to the park just off the I-5 freeway. Go North on Crystal Springs into the park. At the second stop sign you'll come to a four way intersection. The ranger station should be on your right. Make a left at that intersection, go up the road a little bit, and you'll be forced to turn right into merry-go-round lot #1. Just drive through lot #1 and down the road a little ways and you'll be in lot #2. We meet at the far end of parking lot 2. (That's the other end of where you drove in.) Please be aware that Assistant Organizers, Event Hosts, and support hikers are volunteers and organize hikes without compensation and assume absolutely no responsibility for you or your guests. FRIDAY--Easy Night walk around Silverlake

Silverlake can be quite beautiful at night. Walk is mostly easy 2.2 miles RT around the lake. Walk is approx. 1 hour. There is short uphill on this walk--approx. 10 minutes Some members go to the local Oyster bar afterwards. **Rain will cancel walk. Dogs ok as long as on leash.** Parking: Street parking. There is more parking when you park along the lake --along W. Silverlake Dr.

Trails Cafe Hike to the Griffith Park Observatory and Snack/Light Lunch at Top!

Greetings, Transition To Green Community! We will be returning to our much-beloved meeting spot at the Trails Cafe, and then enjoy a hike up to the Griffith Observatory, a hike our group has done many times before. Remember that all Transition To Green hikes are family-friendly (and for children above the age of eight). We have welcomed pleasant, cooler autumn weather since the end of October, with even a few light showers, and anticipate mild conditions for our November hike, with excellent outdoor conditions expected for our trek in beautiful Griffith Park. We will be meeting in front of the Trails Café on the second Sunday of the month. During the winter months - e.g. January, February, and March, we will meet at 10:00 a.m., and will hit the beautiful nearby trails no later than 10:15 a.m. At our halfway point, at the Griffith Observatory, we will stop for a snack or light early lunch at the Cafe at the End of the Universe, where we've enjoyed some healthful meals during recent hikes, with a newly expanded menu including veggie and vegan options (by request) also available. Please bring a reusable water bottle and wear hiking boots or tennis shoes with good treads on them for gripping the ground. Also, bring a hat or visor in case the Sun decides to beam down on us. Wear some SPF 30 on your skin, especially if you're light-complexioned. You may want to apply some sunblock on your nose to prevent burning there. **Transition To Green isn't liable for you in the city park - Griffith Park area, which includes the hiking trails. Our rides range from leisurely social outings to challenging, high-intensity adventures and we welcome guests on all our rides. The **Black Folk™ RoadRunners Bike Group** meet every 1st Saturday morning for rides of varying difficulty, starting from various locations in and around the Los Angeles area. We also administer and record Century Challenge rides, where cyclists can test themselves on 100-mile routes. Many of our rides take place on roads and trails less traveled and our calendar also contains special rides and events, highlighted by our signature ride, *The Black Tour*, in late February. This fully supported 24-hour event includes options for Double Century, Triple, and Quad rides. Throughout the year, we challenge cyclists with other featured rides, and our social events help us replenish the calories we burn while riding. Perfect Weather Hike in Griffith Park! ☀️🙋🏻‍♀️ 🙋 🙋🏽‍♂️

Come join the Perfect Weather Hike in Griffith Park every Saturday (location or route varies). Join us on this friendly social hike, with optional plank challenge at the helipad. Followed by optional breakfast/lunch at the Village Bakery and Cafe. And if anyone wants to buy me a Vietnamese cold brew at the bakery for my birthday I will accept! 🙋🏻‍♀️ Trail Is a roughly a 4.5 mile 10,000 step loop on mostly fire roads. We’ll have views across the city to the Pacific Ocean, Griffith Observatory, downtown LA... It will be VERY HOT so bring cold water, hat, sunscreen… this weeks hike will be the original loop: Moderate hike on the main fire roads with Tiffany. Cadman trail to 5-Points, 2nd trail on the left to the Vista View point/Helipad, down past the Joe Klass water stop, and if it’s not unbearable: past the Cedar Grove, down Commonwealth to Cromwell (lower route, not past Disney estate) through neighborhood back to the cars. Those who want to take the fire road back may. Steady incline approx 700ft elevation gain in the first hour - challenging for beginners but worth it! We’ll gather at each split in the trail to make sure all are accounted for. Dog friendly 🐕. Just remember there are coyotes in the park. It may be Melissa and Bailey’s last hike as well. They are moving out of the area. Come say farewell to our unofficial mascot. 🥟🍺 Dumplings + Beer = A Pretty Solid Friday Night🍺🥟

We’re heading to the **San Gabriel Dumpling & Beer Fest**, where the Historic Mission District gets taken over by dumplings, street food, craft beer, live entertainment, a night market, and thousands of hungry people making questionable decisions about how many dumplings constitute a reasonable dinner. Spoiler: there is no reasonable number. General admission to the festival is **FREE**, so you don't have to drink beer to join us. You purchase food separately from the vendors. If you want access to the 21+ Beer Garden and unlimited beer tastings, you'll need to buy a Beer Garden ticket separately. This year’s lineup includes local food vendors plus a bunch of breweries, so there should be plenty to eat, drink, and wander around pretending we have a strategy. My plan is pretty simple: meet up, explore together, find some great dumplings, maybe discover something weird and delicious, grab a drink if you're drinking, and hang out. Come hungry. Seriously. Don't eat dinner first and then show up saying, “I'll just have one dumpling.” Nobody likes a liar. 😂 🚗 **Getting There:** Parking around the festival can get busy, so I recommend parking far enough then taking an **Uber or Lyft** if you can.
