The Los Angeles Audubon Society will be hosting Open Wetlands at the Ballona Wetlands on the first Saturday of the month, from 9 am to noon. We recommend wearing masks and social distancing. Come enjoy the morning air and your local wetland under the guidance of our trained naturalists. Covid-19 protocols will be followed. Enter through the gate located in the northeast corner of the parking lot behind Alkawater/Gordon’s Market, in the 300 block of Culver Blvd. in Playa del Rey. No baby strollers please. No pets. Otherwise, join us on **Zoom -- come back here just before the meeting to get the zoom link.** **Julia Scardina, SeaWorld’s former Head Trainer and Animal Ambassador, will speak to us in person on Sunday afternoon at 1 PM. She will share "The Birds of the ABC Islands...Aruba, Bonaire & Curacao" and give us updates on her backyard Great Horned Owl family!** Julie is always delightful and charming in sharing her experiences to promote the welfare of birds and other animals, whether she is on TV, or with us at a previous South Bay Bird Society meeting. Julie’s lifelong love of all animals led her to careers as animal trainer, conservationist, and public educator. She has been recognized for her work in these fields with a variety of awards: a Trainer’s Association Lifetime Achievement Award, a US Fish & Wildlife Service award for conservation, a collegiate Hall of Fame induction and an Emmy for educational programming. Julie also co-authored the book *Wildlife Heroes* highlighting 40 conservationists and their life’s work to save imperiled species. Julie’s credentials include almost 20 years as a trainer, working with everything from killer whales to birds, culminating as Director of Training at SeaWorld San Diego; and 20 years as spokesperson and Corporate Director of Training and Animal Ambassador Programs across all SeaWorld and Busch Gardens parks, retiring in 2017. Among thousands of appearances, Julie was a frequent guest on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. She participated in many of Jack Hannah’s televised animal programs and appeared on the Today Show over 100 times discussing animals and conservation. Julie leads “Mission Wildlife,” a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting species conservation, with the goal of encouraging others to make a positive difference in the world we share. Julie’s other affiliations include the World Wildlife Fund National Council, the Emerging Wildlife Conservation Leaders’ board, and the National Marine Mammal Foundation board. “We can all be wildlife heroes - actions such as creating your own backyard habitat and making informed consumer choices can make a big difference for the health and conservation of our one planet and all its inhabitants.” You won’t want to miss Julie’s presentation! Releasing insights from data: quarrying vs. sculpting When Michelangelo surveyed a block of marble, he saw a figure trapped inside; his goal was to release the figure that in his mind was already there. Research involves not only “quarrying” (obtaining) blocks of experimental, computational, or theoretical data but more importantly releasing the insights trapped within. For example, every student of physics learns about the H atom spectrum and every student of combustion learns about the 3 explosion limits of the H2-O2 system - but why these blocks of data? Because, trapped within the spectrum and the wiggly curve are critical, unequivocal insights - that energy levels of matter are quantized and that H2-O2 combustion proceeds through two entirely different sets of intermediates depending on temperature and pressure. In those two famous examples the insights and their significance are “obvious” given the benefit of years of hindsight - what important insights are trapped inside freshly quarried data? The focus of this interactive seminar is on examples of and methods for sculpting data into works of insight. Starting with the aforementioned case studies the audience’s sculpting skill will be challenged with case studies from both the presenter’s own work (some not yet published) and elsewhere within combustion research community, with an emphasis on examples where the insights were both difficult to sculpt and led to counterintuitive insights. Prof. Paul D. Ronney Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineer University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA 90089 Paul Ronney is a Professor and former Chair of the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at USC. Prof. Ronney received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from UC Berkeley, an MS in Aeronautics from Caltech, and a Sc.D. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from MIT. He held postdoctoral appointments at the NASA Lewis Research Center and the U. S. Naval Research Laboratory and a position as Assistant Professor at Princeton University before assuming his current position at USC. He was a Payload Specialist Astronaut (Alternate) for Space Shuttle Missions STS-83 and STS-94 in 1997. Professor Ronney's research areas include micro-scale combustion, turbulent combustion, internal combustion engines, microgravity combustion and fire spread. He has had experiments flown on three Space Shuttle missions. In recognition of his achievements, he is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the Combustion Institute, an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and a Senior Member of the National Academy of Inventors. He is a recipient of the National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator Award, the Engineer’s Council Distinguished Engineering Educator Achievement Award, and the Combustion Institute Distinguished Paper Award. Silverlake can be quite beautiful at night. Walk is mostly easy 2.2 miles RT around the lake. Walk is approx. 1 hour. There is short uphill on this walk--approx. 10 minutes Some members go to the local Oyster bar afterwards. **Rain will cancel walk. Dogs ok as long as on leash.** Parking: Street parking. There is more parking when you park along the lake --along W. Silverlake Dr.

Let's go to the California Avocado Festival in Carpinteria by Train!

What could be more quintessentially California than a festival paying tribute to the Avocado, full of different guacamoles, and getting there on the Pacific Surfliner? This is the 40th year they've been having this festival. There is even Avocado ice cream! Entry to the Festival is free, and the booths are sponsored by local non-profits to raise money for their worthy causes. We've done this trip a couple of times, and it's always been fun. This unique festival is in Carpinteria, only a couple of blocks from the Carpinteria Amtrak station. It's one of the largest festivals in California, with three days of fabulous food and terrific music. [https://avofest.com/](https://avofest.com/) In case you didn't know, Santa Barbara County is the third largest avocado producer in North America, with Carpinteria being a major contributor. As the Festival has grown, so do the number of participants and festival-goers. In past years, over forty non-profit groups benefited by catering to 100,000 avocado visitors. The California Avocado Festival™ itself is a non-profit group that generates its own operating revenue each year. The annual event is completely organized by a committee of volunteers, and includes one part-time staff person. Our group will take the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner from Union Station in Downtown Los Angeles, to Carpinteria. We'll walk to the Festival from the Amtrak station, just a few blocks.
