Let's ride the Empire State Trail from Van Cortlandt Park to Tarrytown Lakes for kayaking! Check out photos from past Tarrytown rides below! As with previous Tarrytown rides, we'll meet in Van Cortlandt Park and ride the Empire State Trail to the Tarrytown turnoff. However, unlike previous years we are *skipping the Tarrytown hill.* That's right, this year we'll stop at the Tarrytown Lakes reservoir for kayaking and fun-in-the sun, and then ride back. *Please note that this event has a $29 fee for kayak rental. After you sign up, we will send you information on how to pay via Zelle, paypal or Venmo.* **Meeting Point** Meet at the bottom of the park side of the stairs of the "Van Cortlandt Park-242 St Station" (last stop on the "1" line). **The Bike Route** You can see the portion of the trail we'll ride on the [Empire State Trail Map](https://empiretrail.ny.gov/new-york-city-poughkeepsie/van-cortlandt-park-elmsford). On the map, it's basically from the (3) to the (4). We're meeting at Van Cortlandt Park and biking up the trail to the Tarrytown turnoff. We'll stop at Tarrytown Lakes and kayak for 1.5 hours, then ride back to Van Cortlandt Park. Shortly before the end of the ride, there's a friendly Italian restaurant with a huge outdoor terrace - we plan to stop there for a victory beer (plus pizza, sangria and more). **Kayaking** We will be renting "Sit-on-Top" Kayaks from Tarrytown Lakes that are beginner-friendly for first-time kayakers. **Lunch and Snacks** Please bring a picnic lunch to eat at Tarrytown Lakes Near the end of the ride we'll stop for victory drinks **Ride Stats** * Level: This is an intermediate ride due to the distance. Riders should be comfortable with riding 10-12 mph for 1-2 hours with short breaks. * Start/End: Van Cortlandt Park at the 242nd Street Station (last stop on the 1 line) * Distance: 37 Miles * Speed: Average 10-12 mph * Trails: 99% paved rail trail through the woods. * Restrooms at mile 0, mile 22, mile 35 (outhouse at mile 17) This ride is **for Brompton bicycles only**. Urban Athletics: Pedals & Pizza – Manhattan

Urban Athletics: Pedals & Pizza – Manhattan

Sun, Aug 2, 3:30 PM
From I wanted to do that...Just not alone!!
4.8

During this cycling series we'll explore New York City one neighborhood—and one slice—at a time. Each ride takes us to a different borough or neighborhood in search of the best pizza, hidden gems, neighborhood institutions, and legendary slice shops. Every event is a new route, new flavors, and a new excuse to ride. Our first ride kicks things off in Manhattan. We'll cruise through some of Manhattan's most iconic neighborhoods, stopping at several pizzerias to sample slices, compare notes, and answer the question that has divided New Yorkers for decades: Who really makes the best pizza in the city? Spoiler: We probably won't agree. That's why this is a series. **The Ride** * Approximately 20 miles * 4 or so pizza stops * Relaxed, social pace with frequent breaks * Plenty of opportunities for photos (of the city and the pizza) **Tentative Pizzerias** * L’industrie * Scarr's Pizza) * Mama's Too! * Patsy's (Route and stops may change depending on group size, weather, and wait times.) **Cost** Everyone pays for their own slices and drinks. The goal isn't to eat an entire pizza at every stop—it's to sample a variety. Pace yourself... this is a marathon, not a mozzarella sprint. **Bring** * A bike in good working condition * Helmet (strongly encouraged) * Water bottle * Bike lock * Cash or card for pizza * An appetite and a sense of adventure **Who should join?** Anyone comfortable riding in NYC traffic at a relaxed pace. This isn't a race—nobody gets dropped unless they secretly stop for a slice without telling the group. Whether you're a cyclist who loves pizza or a pizza lover willing to pedal for your next slice, this meetup is all about good food, great company, and exploring the city from the best seat possible—a bike. Come hungry. Ride happy. And remember... **Calories consumed while biking between pizzerias are scientifically impossible to count!**
