From The New York Afternoon Hiking Meetup

We begin our urban hike at the exact spot where JFK held a major campaign rally in late October 1960, and end where his advance team obtained his favorite food for the evening. We also pass the high school whose graduates include three US Senators who recently served at the same time, as well as one Justice on the Supreme Court. From the subway station we will walk along the city streets to Marine Park and also visit the nearby Salt Marsh Preserve and Visitor Center. After that we make our way to our final destination, Sheepshead Bay, with its scenic waterfront and many shops and restaurants. Our hike will end at the Sheepshead Bay subway station, also on the Q line for easy transportation back to where you need to go. We will walk at a steady, moderate but not slow pace over a distance of around 4-5 miles, stopping at places of interest. There will be no lunch stop, so bring some snacks along if you wish. Bug spray may be useful to avoid mosquitoes during a short time on a gravel nature trail (This hike is intended for adults 18 years and older and please no dogs). Precipitation or even questionable forecast may cancel, postpone or modify; check website for latest updates. We start at 12:45 PM at the Kings Highway subway station (Q Line) in Brooklyn at the corner of Kings Highway and East 16th Street in front of Raising Cane's at 1523 Kings Highway. We'll be going from Herald Square down to Battery Park, and then for dinner at a restaurant on Stone Street that does separate checks for large groups. We'll be going through as many parks and points of interest as can be arranged. Judging by past years, we should reach the restaurant at the end at or before 6:45 PM. We'll be starting just north of the Broadway entrance to Macy's. There are restrooms available at Macy's in the basement -- the women's room is in the northeast corner, and the men's room is in the middle of the southern edge of the basement. Make sure you use the bathroom, our next opportunity won't be until Washington Square Park. Attendance on this hike is free, and all participants attend at their own risk. From the Tuxedo platform, we’ll walk north and turn right onto East Village Road We’ll continue on East Village Road and walk under the I-87 overpass We’ll turn left onto Grove Drive The trailhead will be 100 yards on our right There are three trails. Triangle Trail (yellow) heads north Ramapo – Dunderberg (aka R-D trail, path is red dot on white) trail goes northeast Kakiat Trail (white) heads south We’ll take the Ramapo – Dunderberg trail until it meets the Tuxedo – Mount Ivy Trail (aka the TMI trail) in about 0.8 miles. My intent for this event is that it be a fun, ambitious and interesting, fast paced hiking tour of about 7 miles where we will cover what existed BEFORE Central Park was even built, the history of the Park, and it's design features. We will also see the new Davis Center area where the Lasker skating rink used to be as well the significant changes to the landscape up north which now conforms more closely to the original design of the Park. I will stop a number of times to very briefly talk about what we are seeing. That means I talk and you listen or make believe you are listening! Over the years this group has conducted numerous tours of Central Park and I have led several tours of Northern and Southern Central Park for the Guides Association of New York City (GANYC). This event will be even better. Much better! We are going to keep things moving as much as possible. On this hiking tour we hope to visit areas such as the Ramble where there will be one short climb, Conservatory Gardens, the Ravine, the Great Hill, the Blockouse and the North Woods where there are waterfalls. Central Park is often considered a work of art and hopefully we can show you why! We will be zig-zagging quite a bit. Public transportation will be easy to find before and after the event. Registration will be limited to around 20 members or so. We will meet BEFORE 10:15 A.M. and finish around 3:30 P.M. or so NOT far from public transportation at West 96th Street. If you drive, parking is free on Sundays. We plan to start on the east side and finish on the west side-but you can leave any time. THERE WILL BE A BRIEF LUNCH STOP AT SOME POINT. BRING LUNCH/SNACKS AND WATER. WE WON'T STOP ANYWHERE TO BUY FOOD. THIS GROUP NEVER GOES FOOD SHOPPING DURING AN EVENT! IN CASE YOU ARE WONDERING, THERE WILL BE SEVERAL PLANNED BATHROOM STOPS DURING THE EVENT. Harriman Hike from Tuxedo

Let's hike Harriman. It's a less crowded, more wild park. We'll do approximately 8 miles over some hills, rocky outcrops and past a lake. We'll start at Tuxedo train station, making our way to Parker Cabin Mountain, Lake Skenoto and back to Tuxedo. Newbies are welcome but YOU NEED TO BE AEROBICALLY FIT, an experienced hiker or jogger. The trails are rocky and it's a long day of hiking. **TRAIN FROM NYC**: Arrive at Penn Station around 8:35am. We’ll meet inside Penn Station, at the bottom of the escalators at the 7th Ave and 32nd Street entrance. NJTransit ticket booths are right there. We're catching the 8:53 NJCL train #7229. Get out at SECAUCUS then transfer to the 9:30 MNBNP #71 train toward Port Jervis. We'll arrive in Tuxedo at 10:30am. Return trains are 4:20pm and 6:44pm. **TRAIN FROM HOBOKEN:** This is easier for Jersey guys and faster too. At Hoboken Terminal catch the 9:20am MNBNP train #71 toward PORT JERVIS. The NYC guys will board this train in Secaucus. We all get off in Tuxedo at 10:30am. **DRIVERS:** This hike starts and ends in the same place. We'll meet you at Tuxedo train station at 10:30am. There's parking lot a few blocks from the station, but please meet us at the train station. Check the signs and make sure it’s legal to park here. I don’t drive, so I don’t know the rules. Join us for an afternoon picnic at South Mountain - good food and good company among the trees and various other greenery :) We are potlucking snacks, so please bring snack to share or snacks you know you'll eat. Ideas include chips, salsa/guac, crackers, drinks, desserts, especially stuff that's easy to share and sample. We recommend that you bring something to sit on, as we can't guarantee that we can snag enough picnic tables for everyone (we aren't renting a pavilion for this event to keep it free). If you want to bring your children or pups, this would be a good event to do so! Parking: this one is on the northeast side of reservation - Turtle Back Rock Picnic Area.
