Urban hike: Glienicke castle and Babelsberg castle

Urban hike: Glienicke castle and Babelsberg castle

Sun, Jun 28, 8:10 AM
From Queer Hiking Berlin

Hi everyone! This time, in addition to lakes and forests, we'll explore some of the area's most beautiful architecture and cultural landmarks: Glienicke Palace, Babelsberg Palace, and the famous Glienicke Bridge, where spies were exchanged during the Cold War. We'll start at Glienicke Palace and take some time to admire the grounds before crossing the bridge into Potsdam. From there, we'll continue through the Neuer Garten along Heiliger See, then make our way through parts of Potsdam to reach the Staudengarten on Freundschaftsinsel (Friendship Island – a fitting destination for a hiking group!). After crossing the Havel once again, we'll follow the riverside towards Babelsberg Palace. From Babelsberg, we'll head to Klein Glienicke, an intriguing historical site with a unique Cold War history, before returning to Glienicke Palace. From there, we'll take a bus back towards Potsdam or Wannsee and make our way back to Berlin. The hike is approximately 12 km long and should take around 3 hours, depending on how much time we spend exploring the palaces and their surroundings. We will meet at 10:10 AM on the S1/S2 platform (lower level) at Friedrichstraße station and take the next S1 train towards Wannsee. From Wannsee, we'll continue by bus to Glienicke Palace. Please bring enough water, snacks, and anything else you might need for a comfortable walk. We'll likely have opportunities to sit in a park and enjoy the views of the Havel, the palaces, and the surrounding landscape. I'll be wearing a pink cap, so keep an eye out for a tall person in a pink cap! See you on the trail! Check out our Instagram: @queerhikesberlin

With one exception: The glacial hill landscape along the Oder riverscape. On our hike along “Gipfelstürmer” we explore this enchanting region in a unique way. **WHAT ARE SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS?** The trail won the award for “East-Germany’s Best Hiking Trail” in 2021 – for good reasons: With 17.5 km of ups and downs this summit tour is a great challenge and offers numerous highlights along the way: * **Watzmann & Gloomy Gorge:** This tiny mountain that takes its name from its big brother in the alps offers a large summit cross and a good place for a seated break. Afterwards, we will climb down the scenic “Düstere Klamm” gorge. * **Observation towers:** Four historic observation towers, each with a unique architecture, line our way. They can be climbed and offer spectacular views across the Oder valley all the way to Poland. * **Teufelssee:** The dark forest lake has a magical atmosphere and is the perfect place for a picnic. To relax from climbing, jump in the lake or take a cold foot bath in the nearby stream. From the lake, a delightful loop leads to the edge of the forest and back through lofty heights. * **Thuringia View:** This hill offers a fantastic view into the open landscape, including the two ship lifts that you can see on the horizon. With its seating and the pavilion, the square offers a nice place to picnic and relax. **TRIP DETAILS** **Meeting Location and Time:** * **Option A – Joining from Berlin:** Meet in Berlin Central Train Station (Berlin Hbf) at 9:00 am. **Note:** Exact platform to be advised the day before event in the WhatsApp group for this trip. Hike from Lübben (Spreewald) to Schlepzig

Hike from Lübben (Spreewald) to Schlepzig

Sat, Jun 27, 8:30 AM
From Berlin LGBT Social Club
4.7

Join us for our second hike of the summer! We will start by meeting at (or at least boarding) the **10.40 RE2 (3112)** at **Ostkreuz** station, **Platform 1**. We will arrive at Lübben (Spreewald) at 11.25. *Note that if you miss this train, then the next one does not arrive until 11.56, so you will certainly miss us and won't be able to catch up!* The hike will go from Lübben to Schlepzig, along the canals and lakes of the beautiful Spreewald region. *(See photos for a rough route -- this is not necessarily accurate!)* The walk will be about 15 km and take about 4-5 hours. Bring lunch, snacks & water, comfortable walking shoes, and maybe even some sunglasses. We will stop a couple of places along the way, but will not stop long enough to order food, so bring your lunch! At the end of the walk, in Schlepzig, there is a Whisky brewery and a Biergarten. We will visit one or both. You can also get food at both. Then, we will take the 18:57 bus back to the starting point of Lübben Bahnhof. From there, we will catch the 19.34 RE2 (3129) back to Ostkreuz, arriving at 20.18. *(If you really want to, and if we get to Schlepzig in time, then you can also take the 16.52 bus to Lübben, then the 17.34 RE2 back to Berlin.)* **Note: We will reschedule this if the weather is too rainy. So definitely check back here before going!**
