MLK Shoreline + Ferry, ˜20 miles (Ride #120)

Let's take a spin on MLK shoreline, along the beach on Alameda island, and back on the free ferry to Oakland. We’ll end in Jack London Square for food and drink. This flat ~20 mile route will be mostly on pleasant off-street paths with views of the Bay. We’ll gather outside Lake Merritt BART station between 9:30 and 9:45am, do introductions, and head out by 10:04am. Please make sure your bike is tuned up and ready for adventure. Dress for the weather and bring water, snacks, and money for our post-ride social gathering. No-shows are no bueno in our group; please keep your RSVP updated so folks on the waitlist can join. In this beginner-friendly workshop, we’ll build a light-up heart project while learning the basics of soldering—how to place components, heat the joint, melt solder, and bring a simple circuit to life. No experience needed. Whether it’s your very first time holding a soldering iron or you just want an excuse to make a tiny glowing heart, this class is all about having fun, learning by doing, and leaving with a handmade project you can take home. Kids, adults, friends, and curious makers are all welcome—come make sparks with us. ❤️

5th Sunday Event - Plant Trees in Oakland May 31st

Looking for a small but impactful way to help in the fight against climate change, and green your community over a weekend? Volunteer to plant trees! Our Tree Team plants trees in sidewalks all around Oakland. As these trees grow, they help to improve air quality, sequester carbon, and improve the environmental conditions of our neighborhoods. Many of the beautiful large trees you see along sidewalks are a result of our volunteers, and we still have so much more to do. No experience is required, but volunteers should be ready to do some digging and get a bit dirty. What: Planting trees along sidewalks and streets in Oakland for homeowners. After the training, we will split into smaller groups and drive to the sites. Who: You! Bring your friends and/or make new ones. No experience is needed. You should be able to lift 30 pounds (half the weight of a new tree). What to Bring: Wear closed-toed shoes, clothes that you can get dirty, and a hat for sun protection; bring your own water, lunch and a snack. We'll provide the shovels, picks, brooms, and gloves, but if you have your own please bring them along as we are short on supplies these days. If you are bringing a minor, please let us know. How: Dig a hole, take the tree out of its pot and put it into the ground, backfill the soil around the roots, and sweep the sidewalk clean. The trees will be in other places around town, so **please be on time** so we can meet before we disperse. Making one your team actually trusts is the hard part. False positives quietly destroy on-call rotations: a flaky network blip, a slow cold start, or a brittle UI assertion fires a page, the engineer checks, everything's fine, and over time the alerts get muted. Then a real incident slips through.* *This 20-minute talk walks through how Grafana k6 can be used as a continuous synthetic monitor that's worth waking up for. We'll cover four concrete techniques — SLO thresholds defined in code, aggregating signal across runs instead of alerting on single failures, UI contract tests that survive layout changes, and combining API and UI checks into a single script so a UI failure tells you exactly which team to escalate to.
