Drunken Philosophy: What Philosophy do you reject?

Welcome to Drunken Philosophy, a casual, curious, social discussion club. Come grab a drink and a seat at The Oracle. There are certainly a myriad of philosophical theories available to assist us to manage our crazy lives. The question for this week is: does or can a philosophy that has a tenet or belief that you completely disagree with still be valuable or helpful for you. A couple of examples: Kierkegaard, after all his philosophizing, falls back on a "leap of faith" and belief in God, and, of course, the early Christian writers like Augustine, essentially based their philosophy on a belief in God; if you don't believe in any gods, do these writers have meaning for you? I'm sure many of you can come up with other examples perhaps the reverse of the previous examples e.g. resisting Nietzsche due to his alleged atheism. Do we separate the thinker from his writing e.g. do we read Heidegger now that we are sure he was a Nazi sympathizer or reject him for the same reason (or because he is so damn hard to read I'm told)? So with so much great writing to read, what if any "filters" do you use to decide what to read or not read?

Dog Walk at Franklin Park Conservatory

Dog Walk - come enjoy the beautiful grounds at Franklin Park Conservatory with your dog! We’ll meet on the path near the entrance. Paths are paved and nicely maintained but sunny! The loop I take is approx. 2mi around. There are plenty of shortcuts back if that’s too far or we can take it twice if the dogs are up to it. Please keep all dogs leashed as per park rules, thanks!

Shut Up & Write!™ Easton Town Center

We'll meet at The Capital One Café, 167 Easton Town Center, Space A-103. This is in the main mall where the Microsoft store used to be, on your left if you're standing at the bottom of the AMC Theater escalator. Join us on Saturday for an hour of uninterrupted wordmaking! • What we'll do Join us for an hour of writing! We’ve discovered that it’s strikingly helpful to write with other writers. See if it’s true for you at 10AM on Saturday mornings. Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done. SCHEDULE: 10:00 - SESSION 1: quick intros. 10:10 - timer starts: write for 1 hour. 11:10 - chat / take off / keep writing. OPTIONAL SOCIALIZING happens at 11A-11:30ish. Writing is very solitary. Connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing. BEING LATE IS OKAY: just show up and get settled, then check-in with me after the session.
