Sketch Wagner Park!

The recently renovated Robert F. Wagner park is perfectly situated for sweeping views of the bay, Ellis Island, and Statue of Liberty. Let's hang out in the park and draw! **We'll meet at the south entrance to the park, by Little W St and Battery Place.** Any problems on the day of the event, I can be reached at 646-831-9816. Looking forward to sketching with you! *** IMPORTANT: In case of rain, I will let people know early in the morning if it is canceled, and then reschedule for another day. *** What makes our Meetups different from other art groups and classes? There's no instruction, but we like to share our work, and chat and be inspired. Share tips and learn from people in a casual environment where all levels of artists are welcome! Don't be shy to ask anyone anything! • We sketch for a bit, usually 45 minutes or so, and then get back together and share our drawings, and then sketch again, etc. There's usually time for 3 sketches. • Please bring your own supplies - anything you like to work with - pens, pencil, watercolor, pastel, small sketchbook or large paper, iPad, whatever suits you. • We hand out nametags so everyone can meet one another! • We take photos to share on the site later. Take a bunch! • Sorry, but please leave the dogs at home; they tend to step on the artwork. The Writing Group – First Ever Session in Greenpoint

The Writing Group is at Lovebirds for the first time ever – join us! Craft is in session. **Itinerary** People are welcome starting at **6 o'clock**, and you can come and meet other writers, get a drink, socialize and hang out as you like until 7 when we will start readings. At **7 o'clock** we formally get together as a group to listen to readings from those looking for feedback. * We do not select readers based on order of arrival or a sign-up sheet, so if you have work until late but still want to come and read, you can! * Each reader gets five (5) minutes to read, so please select a section of work which is appropriate for that time limit. * We welcome narrative prose (fiction and non-fiction), poetry, and scripts (be they for screen or stage), so long as it is writing that you're serious about. * We'll then spend another five (5) minutes in discussion. This is time for the listeners to provide feedback on the reading and discussing the craft in general. We welcome (and encourage) constructive criticism, so long as it is done with respect. This is just as important as the reading, and is done as an open conversation not lead by the reader or the host, so no hand raising required! * We try to get to as many people who want to read as we can, so if there are a lot of attendees we will be very strict on time. * We take a short break at **8 o'clock** . At **9 o'clock** we finish readings and start our formal social hour. Meet new friends, connect with old ones, exchange longer works for review, or just let loose.

Hidden Patterns: The Visual Journey of Networks

Have you ever wondered why one startup, one tweet, or one node in your product's user graph explodes while a thousand identical-looking others don't? You've already run into **[Albert-László Barabási](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert-L%C3%A1szl%C3%B3_Barab%C3%A1si)**'s work, whether you knew his name or not. He's the physicist who discovered **[scale-free networks](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scale-free_network)**: the finding that most real networks, from the web to your own social graph, run on a small number of massive hubs instead of evenly spread connections. That's the math behind **preferential attachment**, and it's why the web, social networks, and citation networks all follow the same power law. In collaboration with the **[National Arts Club](https://www.nacnyc.org/)** and its **[Art and Technology Committee](https://www.nacnyc.org/arts-and-programs/committees)**, Barabási will walk through 25 years spent turning that math into something you can look at. **[BarabásiLab's work](https://barabasi.com/)** has moved from raw data visualizations to physical, 3D-printed network sculptures, and from academic papers to museum installations. The current centerpiece is **[Constructing La Biennale](https://www.labiennale.org/en/architecture/2025/living-lab/constructing-la-biennale)**, a 30-by-8-meter data visualization wrapped around the scaffolding of the Central Pavilion at the **2025 Venice Architecture Biennale**. It maps roughly 12,000 architects and 3,800 projects across the Biennale's 45-year history, back to its first edition in 1980, as a single connected graph. Barabási has called it **the most visible work at the Biennale**, and building it, in his words, "*was a massive data science project*." If your product, your portfolio, or your own career runs on network effects, **this is a rare chance to hear from the person who wrote the math for it**. Reserve your spot and arrive early. **Space is limited.**

Painting Tribeca (Duane Park and Skybridge)

Duane Park is an excellent location with a lot of space to paint the surrounding buildings, including a skybridge! Obviously there's lots of other great cast iron facades and old warehouses and new bougie brunch spots--it is Tribeca after all. Our meeting point will be at 11am inside Duane Park. Check in with me on-site so I know who's attending, and then we'll disperse to our individual painting spots. At 2pm, we'll meet back up to show off our art and discuss the day. Gather your materials (watercolor, oils, gouache, acrylics, marker: all are welcome) and join with other artists for the joys and challenges of painting outside!

Intermediate Figure Drawing (3 sessions)

Class dates: September 14\, 21\, & 28 \| 6:30\-9:30pm Learn to shade and render complex forms on the human figure in graphite, working with one model and the same pose for three sessions. Gaby will guide you from capturing accurate gesture and proportion, to understanding light physics and gradients to render realistic volumes. This class is suited for intermediate and advanced artists. Demos and individual critiques daily. **Materials:** Strathmore 400 series Drawing Paper, smallest 9”x12” or largest 18”x24” 4H, 2H, H, HB pencils (Staedler brand recommended) Kneaded eraser Tombow mono zero eraser, round tip (highly recommended)
