Historic Guided Walking Tour of The Beach (Woodbine Beach)

Historic Guided Walking Tour of The Beach (Woodbine Beach)

Wed, Aug 19, 10:15 PM
From Experience Toronto

**Note: You will also need to obtain your ticket in advance, using the link in the Signing up section, as this new tour may sell out.** On **Wednesday, August 19th**, **join Making Waves at The Beach, a historical guided tour from Heritage Toronto.** Bask in the sunshine at The Beach, once the city’s cottage country where Torontonians escaped for summer fun. With toes in the sand, join us as we stroll along the lakefront of this trendy Toronto neighbourhood defined by four beaches. **Purchase your ticket for Making Waves at The Beach on August 19th.** Before the 1950s,Torontonians took steamers and streetcars to escape the city to this once marshy cottage area in the east end. On this walk, we’ll dive into its history, from the shoreline engineering that created the sandy beach today, to former amusement parks like Scarboro Beach Park known for its star attractions – the Tickler, Tunnel of Love, and Chute-the-Chutes – and as the location of the first public exhibition flights of airplanes in Canada. A playground for city residents, this leisure area featured public parks like Kew Gardens which offered camping, picnicking, and amusements for tourists, and the Balmy Beach Club, a hub for sports like rugby and canoeing which spurred a legacy of athletic excellence. Hidden beneath the water’s surface, we’ll also expose the dark history of the formation of the Swastika Club in the summer of 1933, when a group of Anglo-Canadian Nazi sympathizers harassed and attempted to drive “undesirables” – recent immigrants but mainly Jewish bathers – away from local beaches. A roller coaster ride awaits you on this tour, which was developed and will be led by Heritage Toronto volunteer, Adam Waiser, co-host of the Muddy York Toronto history podcast. He’s just old enough to remember the ban on Sunday shopping and he likes to tell stories about the old Toronto when the Glorious Twelfth was the biggest event of the year and people were appalled by the idea of children using swings on the Lord’s Day. **Prepare for the walk:** * Walking shoes * Hat * Sunglasses * Water Public washrooms are located at Woodbine Beach Park, Kew Gardens, and Balmy Beach Park. ‐‐----‐----‐‐-------------‐----------- **COST:** Tour ticket: $8 + transaction fee ‐‐----‐----‐‐-------------‐----------- **SIGNING-UP** * **RSVP Yes to confirm if you will join for food/ drinks after** * **[Purchase](https://www.heritagetoronto.org/event/making-waves-at-the-beach-august/) your ticket and post you have your ticket (scroll to the end of the page)** * A reminder will be sent the day before with my cell and reminder details where to meet and when. RSVPs close 1 day prior and cancellations may result in a No Show and impact future attendance **MEETUP DETAILS:** **Meet at: 6:15pm at the TT Bus stop at Woodbine Beach. I can only wait 5 mins.** **Tour location: We will then join the rest of the tour group at Donald D Summerville Olympic Pool (1867 Lake Shore Blvd East)** **Tour starts: at 6:30pm** **Tour ends:** at 8pm at Fox Theatre (2236 Queen Street East) **Walk length: 2.2km** After: Head over to a local restaurant Enjoy and please post your Comments in the event after

🌿 Walk & Talk at Tommy Thompson Park

Sat, Jul 18, 12:00 PM
From Couples Connect Toronto

Let's kick off our very first Couples Connect meetup with a relaxing walk through one of Toronto's most beautiful nature spots! This isn't a hiking event or a fitness challenge—it's an opportunity to meet other couples, enjoy great conversations, and begin building meaningful friendships in a relaxed, pressure-free environment. We'll stroll at a comfortable pace, pause occasionally to chat, and rotate walking partners throughout the event so everyone gets a chance to meet one another. By the end of the walk, you'll have had conversations with several couples instead of just one. 📍 Location: Tommy Thompson Park ⏱️ Duration: Approximately 2 hours 💵 Cover Charge: $5 per couple The cover charge will be used exclusively to help cover the Meetup group membership and operating costs, allowing us to continue organizing future events for the community. What to Bring - Comfortable walking shoes - Water bottle - Weather-appropriate clothing - A positive attitude and willingness to meet new people! Event Guidelines - Please arrive 10–15 minutes early so we can start on time. - Be welcoming, respectful, and inclusive of everyone. - During the walk, we'll occasionally rotate conversation partners to help everyone connect. - Please avoid discussing politics, religion, or other highly divisive topics during the first meetup. - This group is for friendship and community building, not networking, business promotion, or dating. - If you're unable to attend after RSVPing, please update your RSVP so others can join. We're excited to meet you and start building a community where couples can create genuine, lasting friendships—one walk at a time!

From High Park Hiking Club

High Park Hikers, We are headed to The Beaches **Sunday, July 19th**. Before you say, *"We’ve all lived in Toronto since the dawn of time and been there a million times,"* hear me out. *Au contraire!* Have you ever been to the secret waterfront stretch heading toward the Scarborough Bluffs? I thought not. Prepare to be thrilled, amazed, and profoundly grateful you aren't sitting at home on your... well, you know what. Here are the gritty details: **📍 The Route & Logistics** * **The Start:** We’ll kick things off at the **Glen Stewart Ravine trailhead** (a hidden gem in its own right). * **The Distance:** Roughly **10 km, point-to-point** (Note: This is *not* a loop). * **The Return Plan:** Because it’s a linear hike, we have options to get back to the cars: * **TTC:** $3.35 adult / $2.30 senior. * **Uber:** \~$16 (easily split between three people). * **The Long Way:** You *could* walk back along the main road, but it’s blaringly loud, busy, and completely unrecommended. It turns the day into a 16.6 km trek. I did it once so you don't have to. Trust me on this one. **🥾 Gear & Trail Conditions** * **Footwear:** This is a **hiking boots** kind of day. Waterproof ones are highly recommended. * **The Obstacles:** Expect mud and water. Unless you possess a freakishly long stride, you have three choices: convince your partner to give you a piggyback ride, accept wet feet, or just embrace the sand. * **Difficulty:** We'll encounter some tricky rocks and Level 3 terrain in portions. It's a fun challenge, but nothing to fear. (And no, despite being a beach hike, bikinis are strictly optional). **🌲 Amenities (or Lack Thereof)** * **Washrooms:** Nada. Zero. Zip. * If "answering the call of nature" *in* nature poses a problem, please plan accordingly. As some of you have witnessed, I have to stop occasionally. That said, I've noticed a few people in this group possess the bladder capacity of a camel, which is genuinely impressive. Teach me your ways. **🕒 Rendezvous Details** * **Time:** 9:30 AM sharp. * **Location:** 796 Kingston Rd, Toronto (Carpooling encouraged!). * **Exact Spots:** * [Google Maps Coordinates](https://www.google.com/maps/place/796+Kingston+Rd,+Toronto,+ON+M4E+1R7/@43.6801861,-79.295438,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x89d4cc1ce1702e57:0xa6bac5a92b3f9383!8m2!3d43.6801861!4d-79.2932493) * [What3Words: ///rewarded.waddled.passage](https://what3words.com/rewarded.waddled.passage) Yogis are welcome to greet the morning with a sun salutation at the water’s edge. Don’t let your summer mileage fall off the radar—being outside is great, and this hike will definitely *peak* your interest. **RSVP now and join me.**
