Walking Soccer Game - Parade Grounds

Walking Soccer Game - Parade Grounds

Fri, Aug 28, 10:00 PM
From NYC Walking Soccer

Love soccer but want a more relaxed, lower-impact way to play? Welcome to our **Walking Soccer group**! This is a friendly, social group for people who enjoy soccer and want to stay active without the running, sprinting, and physical intensity of traditional soccer. First game with group is free so you can try to see how you like the game. Subsequent games are $5 to help cover permit costs. What is walking soccer? Walking soccer is played at a walking pace, one heel on ground at all times. The focus is on passing, ball control, teamwork, and having fun while getting some exercise. Rules: One heel on ground at all times, passes stay below hip height to encourage quick passing. No Cleats please. ### Who is this for? * Soccer players looking for a lower-impact game * Former players who want to get back on the field * Beginners who want to try soccer in a relaxed environment * Anyone who enjoys being active and meeting new people * Players who prefer a friendly, recreational atmosphere **All skill levels are welcome!** You don't need to be an experienced soccer player to join. ### Our goal is to create a welcoming environment where people can get some exercise, enjoy the game, and connect with others in the community. Come out, meet some new people, get a few touches on the ball, and have fun!

**Though the body we move in nature, with our mind/consciousness we are part of nature.** **MINDFULNESS - the practice of maintaining a nonjudgemental state of heighted or complete awareness of one's thoughts, emotions or experiences on a moment-to-moment basis.** **MINDFUL WALKING - a practice that enhances mental clarity and reduces stress by fostering a deep connection with the present moment (the here and now) through awareness of each individual step and the Sight, Sound and Smell of the surrounding environment.** **Take the 10:00 am Governors Island Ferry from the Battery Maritime Building (10 South Street).** **You can book the ferry online or at the BMB.** **(check the Governors Island website for complete information)** **Please read the below information carefully and take the time to view the myriads of videos available that explain the concept of Mindful Walking.** **Let me begin by thanking you for accompanying me on a work in progress to develop a methodology for teaching and leading a Mindful Walking workshop, my goal is to guide/lead the novice through an unfamiliar or complex procedure in a step-by-step process so that they can attain a basic level of skill and knowledge in the practice of Mindful Walking. Upon meeting at the Governors Island Welcome Center for a brief introduction we will proceed to the Parade Grounds and commerce with a breathing and exercise session, followed by several training practice walks that will introduce the attendees to the techniques of Mindful Walking.** **For the remainder of our Governors Island adventure, we will alternate long bouts of conversation flowing walking sessions with shorter bouts of silent guided Mindful Walking sessions (which will transverse the natural scenic beauty of the The Great Promenade and The Hills).** **Because of the workshop nature of this event, I will limit the number of attendees to ten (10) people. When you sign up, you will be placed on the Waiting List. Attendees will be manually moved from the Waiting List to the Going List. Am looking for First Timers to attend these training events. My future vision for this method of training is to present many workshops for first timers, mixed with separate events for those adepts with the Mindful Walking concept. Furthermore, I will expand the range of this event to scenic natural locations (including waterside venues) around the Greater New York area.** **Our journey will end at back at the Welcome Center.** **Will be walking at a moderate (not slow) pace. The walk will last three hours and will cover about 4 miles. There will be ample restrooms stops and a 20-minute snack break.** **Heavy rain/snow or other forms of extreme weather will cancel the walk. Please check this site for updates.** **LEADER: Bob Lazzaro email: rlazzaro4@aol.com.** **I will use a voice amplification device to foster better understanding and clarity between myself and attendees.**

North Manhattan Shoreline Scouting Walk — 17 miles

North Manhattan Shoreline Scouting Walk — 17 miles

Sat, Aug 29, 1:30 PM
From Shorewalkers: Members Only Group

How do hike leaders scout walks? Learn how a city walk is scouted while helping Shorewalkers prepare for the [Great Saunter Fall Challenge](https://shorewalkers.org/great-saunter-fall-challenge/) in October. **Meet** Carl Schurz Park (on the walkway, near 84th St toilets) @ 9:30 am for a prompt departure as soon as everyone is there. **Transit** 4/5/6 to Lexington @ 86th; Q to 2nd @ 86th. *Check MTA website for weekend service changes*. **The Plan:** walk at a fast (3.3 mph) pace north (*in reverse*) along the Great Saunter route to Inwood Hill Park, where we'll stop for a break at the Inwood Hill Nature Center. Continue south along the Hudson shoreline to Pier 84 (44th St). **How we'll scout together:** along the way — as a team — we keep an eye out for any updates that need to be made to our [Great Saunter digital map](https://map.shorewalkers.org). Map updates help your fellow walkers, as well as the hike leaders who will lead Reverse Saunter Stretches during Fall Challenge 2026. Using the Saunter map and a live GPS tracing tool (like Strava), we'll note, e.g., where a route detour is necessary, where new toilets are available, old ones unavailable, etc. At points, we may explore an alternate path and then have to backtrack — it's all part of the fun of exploration! **Note** this is a scouting walk — *walk pace, distance & end time are estimates*. **You:** this walk is suitable for fit, enthusiastic walkers with a sense of humor. We'll walk at a quick pace, but will stop anytime someone needs a toilet, drinks, snacks, etc. *Not suitable for slow walkers or the impatient*. Walk limited to 10 participants. *Change your RSVP promptly if you cannot attend*. Habitual no-shows will be removed from the going list. **Bring** drinks, snacks, sunscreen, hydration salts, hat, portable charger, and forecast-appropriate clothing. Bookmark the Great Saunter digital map on your mobile browser. Install Strava, AllTrails, or similar GPS route app. Pack sunglasses: the sun will be in our faces for much of the day due to the reverse course. **Weather** we proceed if light rain is forecast; we'll reschedule in case of severe weather. **Drop-out points** available all around the scouting route. **After party** everyone is welcome to enjoy drinks & eats at the leader's favorite Hell's Kitchen dive bar. Non-alcoholic drinks available. *Times Square subways are a short walk away*. **Coming soon:** on Sat Sept 5 (weather permitting) the *South Manhattan Shoreline Scouting Walk* from W 42nd St counter-clockwise back to Carl Schurz Park. **Leader** Dan D [contact via Meetup] **Co-leader** Sheila Chung
